Prior to the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region D was a VHSL region in class A, consisting of schools with less than 700 students lying in the Southwest Virginia panhandle. It contained the Black Diamond District, Clinch Mountain District, Cumberland District, and Lonesome Pine District. Like all VHSL regions, it sent two teams to the VHSL Scholastic Bowl state championship tournament for the sixteen-year duration of the original Scholastic Bowl tournament structure.

State tournament placement

Teams from Region D finished second in the Class A state tournament in 2010 (Honaker), 2012 (Honaker), and 2013 (Honaker).

In 2008, Lee County finished third in the Class A state tournament, notably defeating George Mason High School and Rappahannock County before falling to eventual runner-up West Point.

Notes

Lee County of Jonesville, VA was allowed to play down from Class AA starting in 2008; prior to their move into Class A, they had not won a single academic competition in over a decade.

J.J. Kelly, Clintwood, Haysi, and St. Paul would eventually consolidate into larger schools which became part of VHSL's new group 2A. JJ Kelly consolidated with Pound High School, who had previously never played Scholastic Bowl, to form Central (Wise), who would later go on to win the 2016 VHSL 2A State Championship. Clintwood and Haysi consolidated after the 2015 season to form one singular high school for all of Dickenson County, Ridgeview. St. Paul ceased to play Scholastic Bowl some time around the early 2000's, returning to the game upon their consolidation with Coeburn to form Eastside in 2011-12.
