Fairview is a public 9-12 high school in northeast Cullman county, Alabama. Fairview's club president is Brett Hogan. Rhonda Hogan is the team's interim coach.

Fairview has competed in the Cullman County Scholar Bowl held at Wallace State each year since the team was started, and outside of this singular tournament the team has been inactive for the vast amount of its existence.

History

Fairview's first quiz bowl team was created in 1981 by Brenda Scott and Dianne Bailey, who co-coached the team throughout the 1980s. The team acquired a vast amount of titles and trophies at area community college tournaments during this period.

Brenda Scott became the sole coach of the team after Dianne Bailey's retirement in 1989.

The team performed particularly well at the Calhoun Invitational for a number of years, including notching an overall win at the tournament in 1992 and winning the 4A division in 1994.

Fairview competed in ASCA competitions for some time in the 1990s but ceased doing so for over 20 years. It would not become a member again until 2017.

Vicki Skelley was given coaching duties after Brenda Scott's retirement in 2000.

Fairview won the Cullman County Scholar Bowl each year from 2006-2008 and its last win came in December of 2012.

Fairview attended Snead State Scholars Bowl in 2008 and 2010 due to an influx of Cullman county teams into the tournament.

The arrival of freshman Brett Hogan in 2013 signaled the dawn of a new era for quizbowl at Fairview. The club was completely inactive until Hogan was named team captain and club president at the beginning of his junior year. Hogan provided all of the team's money as well as drove everyone to events and hosted periodic study sessions at his house. Hogan's persistence and dedication caused Fairview to compete outside of Cullman County Scholar Bowl for the first time in over six years in 2016 and thus improve drastically.

Following Vicki Skelley's retirement in August 2014, Eric Vest was appointed to the coaching position. Vest caused the team A LOT of problems. He was forced to resign for most of the 2016-2017 competition year.

Brett Hogan's mother Rhonda took over as head coach in February of 2017 and served as the interim coach through the end of the competition year.

Fairview attended many West Point-hosted tournaments, including West Point Rainwater Invitaional (finishing close to last in 2016) and SMART II (finishing in the middle of the field).

The 2016-17 season began with promise as Fairview returned four high-scoring seniors, but any hope of a better year was quickly dashed due to the entire team having other commitments while Brett Hogan and Richard Stewart were forced to do all of the team's scoring at events. Fairview was able to qualify for SSNCT but once again could not attend due to a lack of interest from everyone not named Brett Hogan.

Fairview's completely quit holding practices in February of 2017 and the only practices came whenever the team could get together at Brett Hogan's home due to coaching issues.

Fairview qualified for and competed at the ASCA High School State Championship for the first time in school history in 2017. The commemorative plaque from this was unfairly taken by Eric Vest.

Brett Hogan's grandparents travelled with the team to almost all tournaments played in the 2016-2017 season, and are the only fans that the team has had in recorded history.

After losing Brett Hogan and Richard Stewart to graduation in 2017, the team's future is currently in serious question due to not having a steady coach or committed players.

Fairview's program has produced six players that later went on to play quizbowl for Wallace State They are:

David Hadley (class of 2004)

Latasha Goodwin (class of 2007)

Jonna Massey (class of 2007)

Cody Woodall (class of 2009)

Zeb Dahlke (class of 2013)
