Buzzerpalooza is an annual high school tournament usually held in the winter by Case Western Reserve University. Its format is based on the Cleveland TV quiz show "It's Academic." Due to this fact the tournament is popular with many northeast Ohio teams who see Buzzerpalooza as a chance to practice the "It's Academic" format, which thankfully is not to be found at any other tournaments.

Format

Round 1 (Letter Round)

This round contains eight questions worth 10 points apiece, with a 10 point penalty for wrong answers (even if the question has finished). There are no bouncebacks on wrong answers. All questions begin with the same letter, which is announced prior to the start of the round.

Round 2 (Team Round #1)

In this round, each team gets a different set of 6 questions worth 20 points apiece. There are no penalties for wrong answers.

Round 3 (Category Round)

This round contains ten questions worth 10 points apiece, with a 10 point penalty for wrong answers. Again, there are no bouncebacks. All questions follow a certain theme, which appears somewhere in the question or answer line.

Round 4 (Team Round #2)

This round is the same as Round 2 except that each team gets a set of 8 questions worth 20 points apiece. In addition, any team that gets all eight questions correct receives a 25 point bonus.

Round 5 (Grab Bag Round)

This round contains ten questions worth 20 points apiece, with a 20 point penalty for wrong answers. Again, there are no bouncebacks. As opposed to all other rounds, which contain mostly one-liner questions, these questions are pyramidal tossups similar to mainstream quizbowl questions.

Scores are tabulated throughout each round and the leader after the Grab Bag Round is declared the winner.

2008 Buzzerpalooza

Due to transitions among the Case Trivia Club hierarchy, the 2008 incarnation of Buzzerpalooza was hosted not by Case Western, but rather Solon High School. No JV division was created.
