Introduction to Quizbowl
Years at Riverside Brookfield
Andrew Salij began his quiz bowl career as a freshman at his local public school Riverside Brookfield. There, he played on the Junior Varsity team, being the second scorer behind the local legend Chris Olszewski. Salij did not play much quiz bowl during this time, though, as his team only attended Illinois Masonic, IHSA, and NAQT events, and as a freshman Salij could not participate in the former two. Still, Salij played as a history specialist.
IMSA
Sophomore Year
As a sophomore, Andrew Salij notably led IMSA C in scoring on multiple occasions, and near the end of the year he played on IMSA B, taking the the place of Waleed Ali, who was moved up to IMSA A. While Salij was not very active in quizbowl during the first semester and first few months of his second semester, by the end of the year (i.e. April and May)he was participating and doing decently in good tournaments. At the 2013 HSNCT, Salij was the second scorer for IMSA B, playing with fellows Saieesh Rao, Rajiv Patel O'Connor, Daniel Pechi, and Lael Costa. At the HSNCT, IMSA B made it to the playoffs, but it was eliminated by Sycamore in the first round of the loser's bracket.
