Took place from June 3 to June 9 and was won by Dorman over Sullivan of Illinois in a 340-320 final. 64 teams from 27 states and the Virgin Islands participated. The event happened at the University of New Orleans. It is probable that the televised rounds were taped at WYES, as in 1988, though the source does not explicitly state that this was the case in 1989.

Dorman beat Booker T. Washington 400-210 in one semifinal, while Sullivan beat Granville 355-340 in the other.

One of the semifinals was decided on the question "Give the tense, mood and voice of the sentence, 'The letters have been mailed.'"

Questions from the finals included "What is a breed of black and white cow?" and "Colors that are high in value are what?"

The winning Dorman team received rings and $5000 in scholarships, while Sullivan got $2500 in scholarships for finishing second.

The last three single-elimination rounds were broadcast on the Discovery Channel from July 1 to August 24, every Saturday and Thursday afternoon.
