Season

The Catholic Central Varsity Academic Team finished the 2012-2013 season with eight first place finishes, two state championships, a top-10 national finish 2013 HSNCT , and a top-5 national finish 2013 NSC, and a computer national championship, while compiling an overall record of 148-34.

The Varsity A Team began the year replacing three of the four starters from the previous year’s NAQT National Runner-Up team. Responding to the challenge of new head coaches and a nearly entirely new team, the A Team, featuring seniors Brandon Roach, Collin Parks, Paul Hamilton (captain), and Mark Karabajakian, went 54-2 against in-state opponents, with one of those losses coming against the Varsity B Team.

The A Team finished the season by finishing 8th at NAQT’s High School National Championship and 5th at PACE’s National Scholastic Championship; the team’s highest PACE finish since 2006.

The Varsity B Team featuring seniors Evan Creel Gould and Matt Barnauskas, and sophomore Austin Foos and Jack Watts, finished their season with an 88-37 overall record and a 61-9 record against in-state opponents. The B Team was one of only two teams to defeat the A Team in the State of Michigan this season, and for a third straight year finished second at the NAQT State Championship Tournament. They capped off the year with a 21st place finish at NAQT’s High School National Championship (making Catholic Central one of only two school to place two teams in the top 25 in the nation) and a 28th place finish at PACE’s National Scholastic Championship.

The JV and Freshmen teams also competed successfully during the season. The JV Team finished undefeated against JV opponents (20-0) and won an impressive 51 games against varsity opponents. The Freshmen team went 15-4 against JV opponents with only one of those losses against a non-Catholic Central team, and won 21 games against varsity competition. This Freshmen team was also the first to qualify and attend a national championship tournament in school history. The Academic Teams are led by co-head coaches Benjamin Herman (’98) and Christopher Gismondi (’00) and assistant coach Anthony Cornish.
