The University of Toronto is a public university in Toronto, Ontario. It is the largest university in Canada by enrollment, and has nearly three times the number of postgraduate students as any other Ontario university. Toronto's quizbowl team has been active since the early 2000s and has generally competed with McGill for the Canadian ACF Regionals and Division 1 SCT championships. At the 2010 ICT, Toronto's A team finished 5th overall in the best performance of a Toronto team at either ACF Nationals or Division 1 ICT. The team has more recently seen success at Division 2 ICT, coming 5th in 2019 and 6th in 2018.
History
There was a semi-active club at St. Michael's College at U of T circa 2000. As Luke Chao wrote, upon not being able to find a Toronto club:
"I off-handedly lamented my condition on a web-based message board, and forgot about it quickly. A year and a half later, Adam Bishop from UWO read my post, e-mailed me, and told me that St. Mike's had a team. It was at the end of the school year then, but I e-mailed them and they said the club wasn't going to continue since the executives were all going to graduate."
The club was refounded in 2002 by Luke and Hamilton-area Reach for the Top acquaintances. They were joined by Rico Catibog, formerly of Waterloo, who brought with him buzzers and question packets, and Bobby Hsu, formerly of Queen's. Luke was succeeded by Jeremy Weiss, Eric Smith, and Jason Dickson.
In 2004 there was a separate club founded by Engineering students, but they do not seem to have attended any tournaments and no longer exist.
The club has expanded substantially in the years since the 2017-18 school year to become the largest in Canada and one of the largest of any university.
Results
2010 and earlier
In 2001, Toronto placed 3rd at Division II NAQT Canada East sectional.
In 2004, Toronto placed 3rd at Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 5th and 12th at Division II NAQT Canada East sectional.
In 2005, Toronto placed 2nd and 6th at the combined-field NAQT Canada East sectional.
In 2007, Toronto won both Division I and II at the NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 22nd at the Division II 2007 NAQT ICT.
In 2008, Toronto won first place in Division I and II at the NAQT Canada East sectional, and came in 20th place at Division I NAQT ICT and in 17th place at Division II NAQT ICT.
In 2009, Toronto came 1st and 2nd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 2nd in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 16th at the 2009 NAQT ICT.
In 2010, Toronto came 1st and 5th in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 5th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 5th at the 2010 NAQT ICT.
2011-2015
In 2011, Toronto came 1st in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 16th at the 2011 NAQT ICT. Toronto also placed 20th at 2011 ACF Nationals.
In 2012, Toronto came 2nd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 1st in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 26th at the Division I 2012 NAQT ICT and 15th at the Division II 2012 NAQT ICT.
In 2013, Toronto came 4th in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 1st in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 17th at the Division II 2013 NAQT ICT. Toronto placed 4th at ACF Regionals.
In 2014, Toronto came 2nd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 5th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional. Toronto placed 6th at ACF Regionals.
In 2015, Toronto came 4th in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional.
2016-present
In 2016, Toronto came 2nd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 5th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 29th at the Division I 2016 NAQT ICT. Toronto placed 4th and 12th at ACF Regionals.
In 2017, Toronto came 1st and 3rd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 11th at the Division I 2017 NAQT ICT. Toronto came 1st, 3rd, and 6th at ACF Regionals, and placed 15th and 35th at 2017 ACF Nationals.
In 2018, Toronto came 2nd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 1st, 3rd, and 5th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 18th at the Division I 2018 NAQT ICT and 6th at the Division II 2018 NAQT ICT. Toronto came 3rd, 7th, and 8th at ACF Regionals (although Toronto A autobid), and placed 29th at 2018 ACF Nationals.
In 2019, Toronto came 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional and 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional, and placed 18th and 20th at the Division I 2019 NAQT ICT and 5th and 15th at the Division II 2019 NAQT ICT. Toronto came 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th at ACF Regionals (although Toronto A autobid), and placed 23th at 2019 ACF Nationals.
In 2020, Toronto came 2nd and 3rd in the Division I NAQT Canada East sectional (although Toronto A autobid) and 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 9th in the Division II NAQT Canada East sectional. Toronto came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 10th, and 11th at ACF Regionals.
