Stats

Lasting from June 12 to June 18, the tournament was won by Eleanor Roosevelt in a 310-215 final over R.L. Paschal from Fort Worth. It was immediately followed by the Texaco Star North American Challenge.

The format appears to involve each team playing two preliminary games, with some number advancing to a single-elimination bracket. The other semifinalists were Granville from Ohio and George Washington from West Virginia, while the teams who lost in the quarterfinals were Bearden of Tennessee, D.W. Daniel of South Carolina, Destrehan of Louisiana, and Lapeer East of Michigan.

Prelims took place at the University of New Orleans. Televised quarterfinal and beyond matches were at the studios of WYES, the PBS station in New Orleans. This was the first year that the tournament was sponsored by Texaco as the "Texaco Star National Academic Championship." The quarterfinals and beyond were televised on the Discovery Channel nightly from June 19 to June 25, 1988. The winner advanced to the Texaco Star North American Challenge. Scholarships and rings were provided to the winning team, and the awards banquet was held at the Petroleum Club.

An actual question from this tournament was "In trigonometry, what function is the reciprocal of the sine?"
