The 2008 national finals of Reach for the Top were held May 23-26 in Edmonton.

Tournament Results

After the televised playoff rounds, Lisgar defeated UTS 420-415 to win the 2008 national championship. The game was decided by a final neg. This was Lisgar's first Reach championship.

The last day of the tournament began with Ontario-New Brunswick semifinals: Kennebecasis (#2) vs Lisgar (#3); and UTS (#1) vs. Oromocto (#4)

The All-Star team for the tournament consisted of Nevin Hotson (Lisgar), Lujia Lin (UTS), John Clarke (Sir Winston Churchill), and Ethan Chess (St. Paul's).

Harry Ainlay (Edmonton) served as hosts for the classroom portion of the tournament. West Island surprisingly defeated UTS in the seeding tournament, their first loss of the season.

British Columbia

For the first time in several years (since the 1989 revival?), St. George's missed out on a qualification for Nationals.

Manitoba

New Brunswick

KVHS has qualified for Nationals each year since 2004.

Nova Scotia

  • Auburn Drive

Auburn Drive made its Reach debut this year, winning the Nova Scotia provincial tournament and Dalhousie's high school event.

Ontario

UTS has qualified for Nationals 6 times since 2001. Lisgar had registered for the 2008 HSNCT, but withdrew after qualifying for Reach Nationals. Lisgar lost to UTS in the provincial finals just two weeks earlier.

Quebec

For the first time since 2001, a high school represented Quebec at Nationals. Dawson College attended from 2002-06, and Marianopolis College qualified in 2007.

Results

After the round-robin tournament on May 24, the twelve teams were seeded 1 to 12 based on their record, then, as a tiebreaker, the number of points for. The top four seeded teams earned a bye to the quarterfinals, while the remaining eight teams were paired off (#5 v #12, #6 v #11, etc.) for the preliminary televised rounds.

Rule Changes

The negs introduced to the Reach nationals the previous year returned in 2008; however, they applied only to Open Questions, not to Snappers.
