The Greater Pennsylvania Quizbowl Resource (or GPQB) is a quizbowl blog that covers the quizbowl circuit in Pennsylvania. Founded in July 2014, it was previously known as Greater Philadelphia Quizbowl Resource until its expansion to all of Pennsylvania in June 2015.

Purpose
The current focus of the GPQB blog is coverage and analysis of the high school circuit of Pennsylvania quizbowl. This includes tournament wrap-ups, interviews, advice, and the occasional podcast from the contributors. Complementing its Pennsylvania focus is its content for general high school quizbowl audiences. GPQB has covered the basics of quizbowl, outreach advice, studying strategies, and tournament hosting. The site features a schedule for all Pennsylvania pyramidal events and PSAC, as well as tournaments in the surrounding states.

Question Writing
The members of the site organized and edited the 2016 Pennsylvania Novice Initiative, a novice-level tournament designed to correct the lack of material for novice teams to practice on.

Awards
The staff at GPQB announce three awards each year to outstanding members of the quizbowl community in Pennsylvania. Players cannot win the same award multiple times, and coaches are not eligible to win again until eight years have passed -- the equivalent of two student cycles.
Poll
The site has, since the 2015-2016 season, ranked the teams in Pennsylvania at the season's beginning, midpoint, and end. The poll is conducted by current and former members of the Pennsylvania quizbowl community. The pollsters rank the top ten teams by their own metrics; a statistical formula is not used. All the ranking committee members are affiliated with Pennsylvania's circuit.

Because there is no NAQT or official pyramidal state championship (the only official state tournament held is the Pennsylvania State Academic Competition), which despite improvements over the past few years still has some drawbacks in its format) the poll has served as a de facto state title for performance on pyramidal questions.
Manheim Township High School is a high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They host the annual Manheim Township Academic Challenge and Manheim Township Middle School Academic Challenge.
Team History
The Manheim Township Quiz Bowl team first began to emerge as a regional powerhouse under Anne Clouser, during which successful students such as Brad Rutter and Jeff Hoppes were members of the team. Some time after her retirement, Adrian Klopp became the coach and led the team to moderate success at NAC. Starting with the 2010-2011 season, Missy Doll and Chris Manning became the team's co-coaches. They won the local quiz-show Brainbusters in their 2011-2012 season, and in 2012-2013, encouraged their league to switch to NAQT questions from Questions Unlimited. They have stopped attending the NAC, and they made their first appearances at HSNCT and NSC in 2013. Manheim Township tied for 13th at the 2016 HSNCT.

The Pennsylvania State Academic Competition is a quizbowl tournament held each year around May in Harrisburg, in the state House of Representatives and Senate Chambers. Each year's top three competing teams are awarded scholarships. It is run by the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

The competition is televised live by the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) and rebroadcast throughout the year.

History
The Pennsylvania State Academic Competition (PSAC) was started in 1992 by Pennsylvania Representative Joseph Pitts. The first year contained 12 qualifying schools but has since been expanded to one school for each of Pennsylvania's 29 "intermediate units". For several years, the winning team received a scholarship to the Panasonic Academic Challenge, and its format is loosely based on PAC. Most years, the field is around 24 teams.

Format
Three teams compete head-to-head in each game in the tournament. The game is broken into two tossup rounds made up of 10 questions each, and two "fanfare" rounds where each table is given a series of 6 questions. Tossup rounds allow conferring before a team buzzes in, and give the team up to 15 seconds after the entire question is read to come up with an answer. One buzzer is supplied to each player. Fanfare rounds are 60 second timed affairs. Each team gets one fanfare per round. Prior to the adoption of simultaneous fanfares on a whiteboard, this could result in widely varying swings in difficulty between the fanfares given to different teams. This concern has subsided after the adoption of single fanfares for a round answered by all teams as of the 2019 competition. Fanfare questions are asked in rapid succession and once a team passes on a question, they are not permitted to go back to answer it.

The day's preliminary matches are followed by 3 semi-finals and final match for the top 9 and 3 teams respectively. The semi-final round was introduced at some point between 1999 and 2007. Prior to that time each team played two preliminary matches; of the teams which won both preliminary matches, the three teams with the highest points per game were selected to play in the final match. The preliminary matches are currently randomly assigned, which can lead to wildly imbalanced schedules.

During the 2021 competition, after a lobbying effort led by coach Bern McCauley of Great Valley, the competition adopted a two team format for its online competition that year (due to the COVID-19 pandemic.) It is not clear if this will continue or the competition will return to three teams for the upcoming season.

Qualifying and Costs
Main article:Pennsylvania Regional Academic Competitions

Qualifying teams, usually the winners of local championships, are chosen by the various intermediate units. In addition, the previous year's champion receives an automatic bid to attend the tournament.

The top three competing teams are each awarded scholarships. The winner receives 2,000 dollars, while the runners-up receive 500. There is no charge for participating teams, but hotel costs are only partially subsidized, and travel costs are the responsibility of each district.

Questions
Up until 2016, PSAC used house-written questions, some of which were recycled from year-to-year and from the CCIU tournaments. In 2016, after fielding many complaints about the questions, PSAC switched to the NAQT state championship set for tossups and a mix of NAQT and CCIU-written fanfare questions.

Sample old questions included:

Q. Written by Stephen Crane, this novel depicts the civil war by describing an individual soldier's reactions, fears, cowardice and courage in the battle zone. What is the name of Crane's novel?
A. "The Red Badge of Courage"

Q. In 1963, representatives from thirty African nations met in Addis Adaba, capital of Ethiopia, and signed a charter establishing the O.A.U.. What do the letters O.A.U. stand for?
A. Organization of African Unity

Q. This German physiologist was noted for his work with digestion; however, he is better known for stating the theory that all animals are made up of cells. Name him.
A. Theodor Schwann

Q. In 1953 Congress pass a legislative act which extended the U.S. government's guarantee to protect the rights of workers to organize or join labor unions. Name the act.
A. Wagner Act

Q: What kind of colleges are best for women?
A: Women's colleges

Q: Cetology is the study of whales. For 10 points, who wrote Moby Dick?
A: Herman Melville

2003 was notable for having at least 4 different questions on characters from Catch-22 as tossups in different rounds, as well as at least 4 different questions on ranks in the US military in different rounds.

Notable Events
In 2013, an extremely unlikely three way tie occurred between Conestoga, West Chester Henderson, and State College in the championship match. Conestoga won the tournament after a five question tiebreaker.

Ben Hermanhttps://www.qbwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Pennsylvania_State_Academic_Competition&diff=59939Pennsylvania State Academic Competition2023-03-09T00:57:28Z
Ben Herman:

Great Valley High School is a public school located in Malvern, PA in Southeastern PA's Chester County. The school competes in the Chester County Intermediate Unit competition's non-pyramidal league each year as well as many regional invitational tournaments. They host the GVQBT Invitational every February.

Team History
The Great Valley High School team has existed since at least the early 1990s. GV solely played on non-pyramidal local questions until the spring of 2013. To this date, GV has won Chester County league twice (2016-2017 & 2017-2018), though they have never received a league player of the year award. Great Valley won their first PA State Academic Competition Championship in 2018.

Under the tutelage of coach Bern McCauley, the team began to play pyramidal tournaments sporadically in 2012-2013, but became regulars on the circuit by 2014-2015. Still in a period of mixed focus on local and pyramidal quizbowl, the team has started to focus largely on the pyramidal circuit since 2015, despite challenging the top teams in the CCIU format. GV attended their first HSNCT and PACE-NSC in 2016. They have peaked at #2 in the GPQB Poll in 2017, and finished T-77 at 2016 HSNCT and 35th at PACE-NSC 2016. They finished T-97 at HSNCT 2017. Great Valley made their first appearance in the HSQBRank Top 100 in 2016.

Their first varsity tournament win occurred with the team defeating State College at the 2016 Lehigh Valley Academy Tournament, though they did win the six-team Villanova Tournament a few years prior. Since then, they have won the 2018 Manheim Township Spring Tournament. They have also competed at National History Bee and Bowl events, winning regional events and placing at nationals.

The State College Area High School is a public high school team in State College, Pennsylvania. One of the greatest programs in the modern era of quizbowl, the State College dynasty has won six PACE NSCs, two HSNCTs, and one NAC. During that time State College was coached by Julie Gittings, who was the recipient of the 2007 Benjamin Cooper Academic Ambassador Award for her unprecedented achievements. They also did Knowledge Masters, which won seven times, Science Bowl, and Ocean Bowl. Mount Nittany and Park Forest are State College's feeder middle schools.

For a period in the mid-2000s, State College hosted SCAT, a spring NAQT IS-A Tournament.

History
(this section requires improvement)

The State College quizbowl team has its origins in the Knowledge Master Open club.

The team has had two eras of near-complete national dominance in high school quizbowl: once in the late 1990s-early 2000s, and again in the late 2000s-early 2010s.

The 2010 season saw State College claim both the ACF Division II and PACE NSC championship titles. That same year, members of State College competing as Team Pennsylvania won the inaugural NASAT over South Carolina.

Julie Gittings retired from teaching in 2011 and was replaced as quizbowl coach by Karin Sutherland. Since 2012, State College has been much less dominant on the national stage, though the team has remained a statewide powerhouse.

Records
* They are the only team to win either a particular national or any national in four straight years, by winning all four PACE NSC tournaments from 1998 to 2001. They also won an NAC title and an NAQT title during that timeframe. Until Thomas Jefferson in 2019, State College was the only team to successfully defend its title as NSC champion (and did so again in 2011).
* State College holds the record for a game-by-game winning streak at the PACE NSC. Their 37-victory streak is bookended by playoff bracket losses to Henry Ford II in 1998 and Georgetown Day in 2001.

A. "The Red Badge of Courage"

Because there is no NAQT or pyramidal state championship (the only official tournament held is the non-pyramidal Pennsylvania State Academic Competition), the poll has served as a de facto state title for performance on pyramidal questions.

Ben Herman is a quizbowl advocate currently based in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He is a former player for Henderson High School in West Chester, PA and the University of Delaware. Though no longer actively playing, he served in an advisory role for the Penn State team during grad school. His rather meager playing accomplishments include getting a correct tossup on John Quincy Adams without hearing a single word of the question through a freak sarcastic buzz (at a practice), and making no negs to 31 gets at ACF Regionals 2014.

Ben is best known, however, for his outreach work in Pennsylvania. He is a co-founder of the Greater Pennsylvania Quizbowl Resource blog with Chris Chiego, and is its most frequent contributor. He also moderates a thick schedule of around dozen Pennylvania high school and middle school quizbowl tournaments annually, directing or backseat directing many of them. He has also worked toward organizing PA coaches and bridging once separate areas of the state into a more cohesive advocacy group.

Nittany Lion Novice is a high school tournament held at Penn State every autumn. It was started in 2015 by Ben Herman and Victor Prieto as an easy, accessible tournament for central Pennsylvania Schools, and way to get the Penn State team to start hosting events again. Despite isolation geographically, small field sizes, and having to move around the calendar a bit based on the college football schedule, the event has been able to get a few new schools involved with quizbowl. NLN served as the season opener for pyramidal events in Pennsylvania 2017 and 2018.
B. Reed Henderson is a public school in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Team History
The Henderson High school team has existed since at least the early 1990s. Henderson soley played on poor quality local questions until 2009. Prior to this period, Henderson had little on the buzzer sucess (with just one championship in the county format), but produced several county players of the year.

Under the tutelage of coach Steve Sobieck, the team began to play good tournaments starting with PHSAT and CSWIFT. After a period of mixed focus on local and pyramidal quizbowl, the team has focused solely on the pyramidal circuit. They have been one of the stronger schools in Philadelphia area high school quizbowl since that time, although until late 2015 they had never won an all-subject tournament. This first win occurred with the team rallying for a 260 point comeback against Cedar Crest in the finals at Manheim Township's winter invitational. They have also frequently competed at National History Bee and Bowl events. To date Henderson's A teams have never had a losing season. They made their nationals debut at HSNCT in 2016 where they tied for 34th place and finished 2nd among PA teams attending the tournament. Henderson bettered this performance at HSNCT in 2019, where they tied for 12th out of 336 competing teams.

Henderson hosts the Henderson Invitational high school tournament every November.

* It is assumed that an edition of this tournament was held in 1999, since "Battle of the Burgh II" was held in 2000; however, NAQT's website does not list results for any non-HSNCT tournament for the 1998-1999 season.
* In 2011, Camp Hill and Rocky Grove finished tied for 2nd.
* The 2011 edition was deemed "Battle of the Burgh XIV", but at this time evidence of only 13 Battles of the Burgh (Battle of the Burghs?) have been found.
* In the 2017 Tournament, Allderdice A was initially declared the winner. However, due to an error using SQBS, Winchester Thurston had actually won and was retroactively awarded first.

They have been a mid range power in Philadelphia area high school quizbowl since that time, although until late 2015 they had never won an all-subject tournament.

Because there is no NAQT or pyramidal state championship (the only official tournament held is the non-pyramidal Pennsylvania State Academic Competition), the poll has served as a de facto state title for performance on pyramidal questions.

Each team gets one fanfare per round, which can result in widely varying swings in difficulty between the fanfares given to different teams.

The Blue Hen was a high school quizbowl tournament that was held every March at the University of Delaware. It is currently defunct. Run on NAQT questions, it tended to attract a mid-size field of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. teams.

Originally the tournament only allowed Delaware teams to participate. Starting with Blue Hen III the field was opened up to outside schools. The top Delaware school received the Founders' Trophy, which contains the names of the Delaware ACC members on the team in 1999.

The Blue Hen is a high school quizbowl tournament that was held every March at the University of Delaware.

The names listed on the Founders Cup are David Balseiro, Richard (Hayden) Hurst, Dave DeForge, Kate Gample-Wallenjeck, Rajeev Gorowara, Arnadlo Gutierez, Eric, and Michael Rulon.

One feature formerly popular with some teams was the trash round. This was run on a packet written by the Delaware team while a set of pairings was being calculated, either a late preliminary or the playoff bracket.
* It is assumed that an edition of this tournament was held in 1999, since "Battle of the Burgh II" was held in 2000; however, NAQT's website does not list results for any non-HSNCT tournament for the 1998-1999 season.
* In 2008, North Allegheny and Shady Side A tied for 2nd.

The Winchester Thurston School is a private K-12 college prep day school in Pittsburgh. During the mid 2010s, they have consistently been one of the anchors of Pittsburgh Area quizbowl, winning numerous tournaments in the area. They tied for 21st at the 2013 HSNCT behind the play of Nathaniel Brodsky. Four seasons later tied for 9th at the 2017 HSNCT, behind a true four man effort featuring Jacob Dubner, Nathaniel Hull, Aiden Place, and EJ Eppinger each scoring at least 19 points per game. That performance marked the final coaching event for team founder David Hallas, who retired afterward.
