Harvard is a large private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It participates in ACF, mACF, and NAQT tournaments.

History
Jeff Johnson led Harvard to a series of successes in the second half of the nineties, retiring after their 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the 1997 ICT and ACF tournaments.

Harvard performed the notable feat of qualifying three teams for the 2000 NAQT ICT at nearby Boston University with a total of five players. Harvard hosted the SCT and had very few people available. Two of the teams consisted of Jeff Johnson and Vik Vaz playing solo.

The club was quite large, sending as many as seven teams to local tournaments through the end of the nineties. A precipitous decline followed.

Vik Vaz, Dan Suzman, Jim Davis, and Frank Kelly won the ICT undergrad title in 2003. Harvard (Dan Suzman, Paco Brito, Jim Davis) returned to the undergrad final in 2004 before falling to Illinois. The same year, Harvard's Division II team (Sarah Watson, Noam Lerer, Eric Nielsen, Alexandra Helprin) finished third after losing in a tiebreaker. Harvard (Dan Suzman, Frank Kelly, Will Rooke) took third in the undergraduate division in 2005 after losing a tiebreaker to Carlton. In 2006, Harvard again qualified one undergrad team, which registered but couldn't be bothered to show up. People were rightfully pretty angry.

But Harvard's all-freshman Division II team that year (Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Sam Lederer, John Lesieutre, Adam Hallowell) came on their own and took second place after falling to Stanford in the final. In 2007, Harvard's all-sophomore team (Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Julia Schlozman, John Lesieutre, Adam Hallowell) placed second after losing to Carlton in the undergraduate final. As juniors, that same team won the Undergraduate title at the 2008 ICT.

From 2009 to 2011, Harvard A did not win any games at the DI ICT.

Harvard placed fifth overall at the 2014 ACF Nationals. Harvard's B team won the DII title at the 2018 ACF Nationals by virtue of being the only DII team in the field.

Tournaments
In addition to occasionally hosting ACF or NAQT tournaments, Harvard runs an annual high school tournament, the Harvard Fall Tournament. Under the now disgraced leadership of Andy Watkins, the team hosted two packet-submission regular-difficulty T-Party events and two housewritten nationals-difficulty Harvard Internationals.

HFT
Harvard has produced HFT since 2006 designed to be a challenging set for high school quizbowlers (hence the designation "regular-plus" difficulty). While generally well received, HFT has long faced criticisms for being too difficult. Recent iterations of the set have shown to be more accessible.

Media Exposure
In late 2008, the Harvard quizbowl team became the center of two articles by student journalist Christian B. Flow, who practiced and traveled with the team for a number of weeks. These articles were extremely well received by the Quiz Bowl community.

The Watkinsgate scandal generated significant national media coverage, from outlets like The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and others.
This article describes the quizbowl team at the University of Kentucky. For high quizbowl in the state of Kentucky, see Kentucky Association for Academic Competition.

The University of Kentucky, frequently referred to as UK or simply Kentucky, is a public university in Lexington, Kentucky. The school has had an active quiz bowl team for many years.

Although not affiliated with the school's quiz bowl team, NASAT was held at the University of Kentucky each year from 2016 to 2019.

History
After an era of dominance that lasted from 2001 to 2004 that included several tournament wins, the team lay defunct until 2012. Then, it was revived by a group of players led by Rahul Annabathula and guided by Fred Morlan. They passed the torch to second generation in a process lasting from 2014 to 2016. The UK Quiz Bowl Team regularly hosts UK Fall and UK Spring Tournaments, usually in White Hall. They have a rivalry with the University of Louisville.

The Kentucky Team has made several contributions to the game. Kentucky Player Kelly McKenzie suggested that ACF create ACF Fall to increase the appeal of Quiz Bowl to inexperienced players. Player Seth Kendall was the first documented player to achieve a Grail, doing so against Tennessee-Knoxville in 2005.

To ensure a steady supply of talent and staff, Kentucky has created the role of Social Media Director to promote the team and the game of Quiz Bowl to the community at large. During the tenure of the first Director, Megan Stinnett, the team has hosted several student outreach events and delivered news through its integrated Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This program has produced over half a dozen new recruits thus far.

Due to its increasing size and diversity, the team possesses a country-wide fanbase. Major areas of fan support outside the Commonwealth include Las Vegas, Rolla MO, Norman OK, Columbia IL, and West Virginia. More recently, the team has experienced triumph and trouble, coming in runner up against Michigan State at ACF Fall but experiencing the 2017 UK Travel Incident.

Florida State University is a public university located in Tallahassee, Florida. Their quiz bowl team was very active in the 2000s, but with the departure of its core members disappeared from the circuit for most of the 2010s. The program appears to have revived somewhat, playing Terrapin in 2016, three tournaments in 2018, and the online Delta Burke mirror in January 2020.

The old incarnation of the team was officially known as the "Brain Bowl" team. Major players included Billy Beyer and Matt Alford.

FSU's highest national finish was 10th in DI at the 2009 ICT.
The University of South Carolina (or U of SC, but not USC) is a public university located in Columbia, South Carolina. Their quiz bowl team has played and hosted tournaments for many years.

History
The University of South Carolina Academic Team has attended tournaments of all types during each quizbowl season since 1994-95. The team was founded by Tom Waters, who won some tournaments during his tenure and instructed several of the early players who became great players in their own right (notably, T.C. Ford and Vernon Davenport). The “Golden Age” of the team was from 1996-2000, during which time the team, led by Waters and later by the incomparable T.C. Ford and his pupils, won several tournaments. In the post-Ford era, the team has enjoyed decent regional success. The team has competed at most ACF events (including several nationals), as well as several NAQT Sectionals. The team ceased playing in CBI tournaments in 2001. The team usually plays in ACF, mACF, and NAQT tournaments in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with occasional out of region trips.

The team is unofficially sponsored by Cracker Barrel restaurants and Vault.
The current head of the University of South Carolina Academic Team is Robert Harden.

Duke University is a private university located in Durham, North Carolina.
History
Duke's quizbowl team was active in the late 1990's, and attended primarily NAQT tournaments and ACC Conference tournaments. Duke's team attended NAQT's ICT in 1997, 1999, and 2001, and their best finish was 16th at the 1997 NAQT ICT.

After the 2001 ICT, Duke's team went relatively inactive until the 2007 season. Beginning in 2007, the team once again began attending mid-atlantic tournaments semi-regularly, primarily at regular difficulty and below. This iteration of Duke's team never attended nationals, but did attend NAQT Sectionals in 2011 (Division II).

Recent History
Duke University's college quizbowl team was revived in the 2014-2015 academic year under the leadership of John Stathis and Ryan Humphrey, as well as Gabriel Guedes in more recent years. Since the 2014 season, Duke's team has regularly been a top 25 team in polls, and has attended both national championships in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 seasons. Duke also fielded a DII team at the 2015 ICT, and qualified a DII team for ACF Nationals 2015, but elected not to attend. Currently, Duke's top finishes at nationals in recent history have been a 21st place finish at the 2016 ICT, and a 16th place (3rd place undergraduate) finish at ACF Nationals 2017.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public land-grant university located in Blacksburg, Virginia. Its quizbowl team, known as the Academic Competition Organization at Virginia Tech (VT-ACO), has been active for many years.

History
VT-ACO was established during fall semester 1995 by undergraduate students Jeff Ford, Dennis Loo, and Jason Thweatt. In the words of the club's constitution, its founding mission was to "promote greater campus participation in College Bowl and other academic invitational tournaments by overseeing the administration of the intramural College Bowl tournaments, sponsoring other campus activities, and selecting teams for intercollegiate play."

Despite being newcomers on Virginia's collegiate quizbowl circuit, VT-ACO thrived during its early years. In only its second year of operation, the organization made it to the 1997 NAQT ICT. In 1998, Tech sent teams to that year's ICT as well as the College Bowl NCT, where they would make a second appearance the following year.

One of the greatest successes in the recent history of the team was during the 2007 ICT at the University of Minnesota. They finished 14th out of the 32 schools in Division II. Their top three players were Sarah Mahood, Martin Davis, and Michael Hundley, with respective PPTHs of 2.41, 0.69, and 0.65. Mahood was the fourth highest scorer in the division. They returned to ICT the next year, this time less successful, placing 24th with a 3-10 record.

In 2010, former Maryland player Dan Goff transferred to Tech from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Elected VT-ACO's president the following year, he – along with Mike Hundley, now the team's advisor – helped to bring the team back after a period of relative inactivity. Founding member Jason Thweatt, who returned to Tech in 2002 as a professor and advisor/coach for VT-ACO, left the team in 2012.

In 2014, the team hosted SCT and competed at ICT finishing 18th. The team comprised of freshmen Matt Fleischer, president Michael Chuber, junior Max Chewning, and senior Omar Abu-Realh.

In 2018, the Hokies returned to ICT, winning the 2018 Carolinas Sectional. The team comprised of president Eric Chang, sophomore Jack Huguenin, graduate student Sarita Hough, and sophomore Nick Luca. They finished 23rd overall.

The College of William & Mary is a public university in Williamsburg, Virginia. William & Mary has been active on the mid-Atlantic circuit since their founding in 2006.

History
Founded by Matt Morrison in October of 2006, William & Mary Quizbowl could have theoretically been founded a year earlier by W&M Law student and former Duke Quizbowl President Darren Abernethy but he instead chose to play CBI.

In November 2006, at the first tournament the team attended (some Southern Virginia U. excuse for college quizbowl run on NAQT questions and designed for CBI-only teams), there were notably several Latter Day Saints regulations at the host venue, including a caffeine ban (which was blamed for one of W&M's two losses) and a strict dress code requiring men to shave their beards and not have long hair. Fortunately W&M's team was not kicked out despite consisting of two Jews (one of whom had a thick beard), a Russian, atheist drunkard with long hair, a Catholic gay guy, and the only "acceptable" person in that setting, Matt Morrison. The team earned its best finish to date, 2nd place to SVU's house A team. This was probably due to the weak field, though they did beat Virginia Tech A thoroughly.

Thankfully, the 2007-2008 team appeared to be less of a motley crew and to have better hygiene than the previous year's team. Matt Morrison recruited so many people that it caused an integer overflow, so only a few notable freshmen remained: Mark Guerci (former Maggie Walker captain), offensive tackle Jon Ogden (formerly of GDS), current President Dan Leifer (formerly of GDS), Ellen Speers, Matt Peppe, Matt Tobin (formerly of Bergen County Academies), and Claire Meers. Additionally, George Berry tagged along for some fall tournaments due to his previous inability to form a team at his community college.

With the loss of Matt Morrison to J. Sargeant Reynolds for the fall semester, the entire team amounted to nothing more than a handful of freshmen and sophmores. Actually returning this year were Dan Leifer, Jon Ogden, and Ellen Speers, joined by fellow classmate Alex Kashurba. After a larger than expected turnout from the activities fair recruitment, freshmen attendance eventually dwindled to the usual lackluster numbers. Staying on for the ride were newcomer Annie Adams, Lisa Iverson, Chris "The Asian Guy" Dao (who played on Maggie Walker D for a year), and Bali Gupta (formerly of Thomas Jefferson B). The team attended the Mid-Atlantic ACF Fall at VCU, where the A-team finished 3-8 and the B-team finished with a disappointing 0-11 after seeing many close matches. The team earned its first tournament win at the Reynolds Invitational Open Tournament (RIOT), hosted by J. Sargeant Reynolds. The A-team finished 11-1, beating out UMBC in a thrilling final match, while the B-team, which saw Dan Leifer pick up the neg prize with 42 negs, managed to actually win a game and finished 1-10.

Under the leadership of Sean Smiley and James Cole, William and Mary Quizbowl began a rebirth. They started writing and running James Blair Bowl for High Schoolers. Additionally, with an influx of quizbowlers from Virginia and DC-area schools, the club was able to get 8th place at DII ICT, as well as field a competitive B team at SCT.

Disclaimers
William & Mary Quizbowl has nothing to do with VHSL States, which has been hosted at the College long before the club was founded. Confusion may arise from the fact that in 2007 three club members were volunteers at States and Matt Morrison was hired as Group A coordinator, notably showing up last-minute wearing jeans and a golf shirt.

Also, the club was not involved at all with William & Mary's CBI program. Nick Hoelker was the only W&M player who played in both CBI and invitational tournaments.
