Patrick Liao is a Canadian quizbowler who formerly played for the University of Pennsylvania and Lisgar. He was part of the 2015 ACF Nationals championship team along with Eric Mukherjee, Saajid Moyen, and Chris Chiego, and was the first Canadian to win an the ACF Division I title. In high school he was the alternate on the 2008 Reach for the Top championship winning team, and captained Lisgar to a 3rd place finish in the 2011 Reach for the Top nationals.

Reach for the Top
Patrick began playing Reach for the Top at Lisgar in grade 9, where after the Edmontago crisis he went to Reach for the Top Nationals as a spare on a powerful team that defeated UTS to be national champion. The following year saw him be on the A-team as a regular, as Lisgar tied for first at regionals and came in the top 10 at provincials. In Patrick's grade 11 year, he captained a Lisgar team consisting of three other grade 11s and a grade 10 to first in Ottawa regionals. However, that year Lisgar's long streak of playoff appearances at the Ontario Reach provincials was ended when Lisgar was seeded in a tough pool in which it went 5-2.

In his senior year, Lisgar swept the Ottawa regionals, and was seeded 2nd going into the playoffs. Patrick's Lisgar team was eliminated in a semifinal game against UTS, which led to Patrick jubilantly exclaiming that he never had to play Reach again. (Un)fortunately, Patrick's successful protest (resolved post-tournament) that "de la Salle" should have been accepted for "René-Robert Cavalier" and a team from another province dropping meant that Lisgar made the national finals. At nationals, Patrick captained the team to a third-place finish when Lisgar lost to Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute (CCVI), that year's Ontario champions, in the semi-finals.

Quizbowl
Patrick's first quizbowl tournament was the 2007 Ottawa Quizbowl tournament, in which he was the second-top scorer and his Lisgar C team came third. Patrick played on the Lisgar team that made HSNCT in 2009, 2010, 2011, although he only went to the first two because he went to PACE NSC in 2011. He also captained a team that won the 2010 Ontario Provincial NAQT championships. Patrick is infamous for answering "Daniel Carter" for "Jimmy Carter" at a tournament. Daniel was the captain of Lisgar's rivals, Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute.

At Penn, Patrick instead became notorious for writing about Canada inordinately for submissions and for helping the team to a fourth-place finish at ACF Nationals 2012. His depth of knowledge in history, classics and Canadiana has proven very helpful. Patrick helped the team win the 2015 ACF Nationals as a senior, making him the first Canadian player to win ACF Nationals.

The shining pinnacle of Patrick's quizbowl career was tossup 20 of the 2015 ACF Nationals final against Chicago; Patrick achieved a spectacular buzz on the On-to-Ottawa trek, thus bringing his UG career full circle, it having started with him writing a near-impossible question on the same topic (directed to do so by Eric Mukherjee) as a freshman.

As observed by Mike Cheyne and others in 2014, the rivalry between Matt Jackson and Matt Bollinger was perhaps the greatest ongoing high-level quizbowl rivalry of all time, the "Magic/Bird, Stone Cold/Rock" pairing of quizbowl. It is unclear how Seth Teitler and Jerry Vinokurov feel about this assessment.

High school
The first recorded face-off between the two players took place in May 2009, late in their junior year of high school, at the Monroe Academic Tournament (with the fitting acronym MATT), hosted by James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, VA . Though the score was close to tied at the half, and neither Jackson nor Bollinger were at that point leading their teams in scoring, GDS won the game 505-155.

After a summer of intense study, the two players continued to face off as the leaders of the two best teams in the Washington, D.C. metro area in the 2009-2010 high school season, often meeting in crucial games. Both of them traveled to play solo at the 2010 ACF Winter tournament at NC Wesleyan, splitting their games with each other and otherwise beating all the college teams present except for the VCU and Maryland squads that finished atop the tournament. At both the NAQT Maryland/DC championships and the late-season Maryland tournament, Jackson's GDS team defeated Bollinger's St. Anselm's team in first v. second place matches to take the titles. At the 2010 NSC, Bollinger's St. Anselm's team emerged victorious from the tiebreakers in a 440-420 slugfest with Jackson's Georgetown Day team in the playoffs, which ultimately determined which team took the fourth-place national trophy in the tournament. However, Jackson was the top individual scorer for the event.

College
Both players had immediate impacts in college, at Yale and UVA respectively, most notably at the 2011 ACF Nationals, where Jackson led his team to victory as the only freshman to ever lead a national championship team in scoring, and Bollinger led a depleted UVa into the top superplayoff bracket, upsetting multiple teams who had finished in the top 10 of NAQT nationals the week before. Jackson also picked up a D2 national title at that year's ICT, while Bollinger finished just a third of a tossup per game behind Chris Ray for top scorer in D1.

In 2012, Bollinger's UVA team won the ICT, and Jackson rejoined the D1 squad, which he led to a third-place finish.
The two teams met in the finals of ACF Nationals, which Jackson's Yale team won on the final tossup.

2013 saw the second national finals pairing of the two teams, as Yale defeated UVA in the finals of ICT 390-350 following Jackson's power on the final tossup of the game. Yale also made their third straight run to the ACF Nationals finals.

In 2014, the teams met for the third time in a final, as Bollinger's Virginia team reversed the 2013 result and defeated Jackson's Yale team when Bollinger answered the final tossup of the ICT final. The undergraduate rivalry concluded with Virginia's victory at 2014 ACF Nationals. While no final with Yale was required (UVA cleared the field with no losses and Yale had two), the tournament fittingly ended with Yale in second place, the fourth 1st-2nd pairing of the teams, with two titles for each, in a three-year period. This result was repeated at the 2014 Chicago Open, where Bollinger was again top scorer, and Jackson was third; Bollinger's team went undefeated to win the event, while Jackson's again got second.

The main division of the 2011 ICT, a year in which Jackson elected to play Division II, was the only national tournament of the eight held during Jackson and Bollinger's undergraduate years that did not feature either player in the final, and one of only two that neither player won. Matt Jackson's worst finish at ACF Nationals in his entire undergraduate career was second place.

Miscellaneous
* As calculated by Bollinger, his career record against Jackson with their school's teams is 16 wins, 14 losses.
* Bollinger and Jackson both traveled to Winter 2010 in a car hilariously driven by Chris Ray, which inaugurated years of Waffle House jokes.
* The rivalry split the loyalties of Jacob Wasserman, who played with Bollinger at St. Anselm's until 2010 and with Jackson at Yale from 2012 to 2014.
* Bollinger and Jackson played VCU Sunday 2010 and CO History Doubles 2012 on the same team. When Bollinger head-edited Chicago Open 2013, Jackson freelanced over 50 questions, including most of the tournament's philosophy, and provided much-needed logistical assistance.
* Matt Weiner's dream to engineer an "all-Matt team" at Chicago Open has remained sadly unfulfilled. However, an alliance of Jackson and Bollinger (with Auroni Gupta and Tommy Casalaspi) did win the 2015 Chicago Open, with Jackson and Bollinger as the tournament's second- and third-place individuals.
* The last tossup in the 2013 ICT Division I final between a Jackson-led Yale and a Bollinger-led Virginia was on Kazakhstan. Jackson got the tossup, and won the championship for Yale. Two years later, when Jackson won his Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions semifinal, the Final Jeopardy answer was "Kazakhstan" and Jackson wrote (hi Matt B.) after his (correct) answer
Patrick Liaohttps://www.qbwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Patrick_Liao&diff=24087Patrick Liao2015-05-16T21:34:11Z
Patrick Liao: /* Writing */ expand

ACF Nationals is an annual event held by ACF . Along with the NAQT ICT, ACF Nationals is one of the two tournaments which determine a national champion each year in collegiate quizbowl.

More information on editors and circumstances of ACF Nationals can be found at the ACF page. ACF Nationals was first held in 1991, though it is the successor to prior events such as the National Invitation Tournament and All-American Invitational which date back to 1979.

Considering the three events as one chain of "ACF-style" national championships, ACF Nationals is the oldest national title, at 36 years as of the 2015 tournament. It is also the most frequently awarded -- the 2015 championship will be the 33rd (no tournament was held in 1986, 1987, 1990, or 1992). ACF and its predecessor organizations surpassed the College Bowl NCT's 28 instances with the holding of ACF Nationals in 2011.

Beginning in 2008, ACF Nationals crowned Undergraduate and Division II champions in addition to overall champions. Unlike at NAQT ICT, the Division II title is awarded to the highest-finishing Division II team in the overall field, rather than being played in a separate tournament. Unofficial winners by the current criteria are noted for pre-2008 tournaments, when known.
Notes
*The tournament was not held in 1992.
*There are no surviving stats from 1991 or 1993; as such, the all-stars are unknown. 1994 stats do not contain full individual information and only contain team stats + the names of the top four all-stars.
*Undergraduate and Division II titles prior to 2008 are retroactive. In years listed as N/A, the stats do not contain enough information to retroactively determine Undergraduate and Division II eligibility.
*No D2-eligible teams participated in 2006.
*The 2002 tournament was originally announced as "hosted by George Washington University;" however, it had to be moved to Maryland due to room access issues at GWU, and most of the staff was recruited by Maryland. GWU assisted in running the tournament.
Patrick Liao is a quizbowler at the University of Pennsylvania.

Career
High School

College
At Penn, Patrick instead became notorious for writing about Canada inordinately for submissions and for helping the team to a fourth-place finish at ACF Nationals 2012. His depth of knowledge in history, classics and Canadiana has proven very helpful.
Chris Chiego is a notable player and former team president and treasurer at Georgia, former player/tournament director at UCSD, and coach of Germantown High in West Tennessee. He currently plays for Penn.

High School Experience
Chris excelled at the 3 local pyramidal tournaments he played in high school, but his school chose to concentrate on the local TV tournament, , which once negged him for saying "centrifuges" instead of "devices for making nuclear material."

College Experience
Georgia
While at Georgia, he helped lead a rise in Georgia's quizbowl fortunes, culminating in the highest-ever finishes for a UGA team at a nationals (9th in DII at 2005 ICT, 15th overall at the 2009 ICT) as well as the most number of teams fielded (six at the 2007 ACF Fall Southeast mirror). He will be missed by the southeast community for both his playing skills and talent for running efficient tournaments.

UCSD
At UCSD, Chris teamed with Auroni Gupta and other UCSDers to help lead UCSD's 9th-place nationals finish at the 2010 ACF Nationals and 2012 ICT.

Tournament Directing Experience
Has directed approximately 20 tournaments from Georgia to San Diego to Germantown. Author of the Tournament Hosting Guide on SoCalQuizbowl.org.

Writing Experience
Chris has collaborated on a number of novelty tournaments with Bruce Arthur, including July Crisis and RMPFest. Solo-author of a packet for Zot Bowl as well as several editions of Geography Monstrosity. Helped with MAGNI including last-minute overnight packet assembly. Also helped write several UGA high school tournaments in mACF style in an effort to expand good quizbowl in the Southeast.

Other
*Co-Founder of SoCalQuizbowl, an organization dedicated to improving quizbowl in California and all along the West Coast.
*Liveblogged the 2009 HSNCT, which ended up getting a mention on Deadspin , as well as the 2010 HSNCT. See this site for links to the liveblog.

High school
In high school, Matt Jackson went to Georgetown Day School; during his senior year there, he was the top scorer at all ten regular-season tournaments he played, as well as the 2010 NSC; he took the 2nd place All-Star spot at the 2010 HSNCT.

Matt Bollinger played for the University of Virginia, during which time he became the best active player in college quizbowl. He was a member of the St. Anselm's class of 2010.

His undergraduate career featured numerous key matches against Yale's Matt Jackson as part of the Jackson-Bollinger rivalry.

High school
After his high school teammate Aidan Mehigan became good at quizbowl, Matt went on an enormous study binge over the summer of 2009, which paid off when he was the second highest scorer at the 2010 NSC (where his team placed fourth). With Chris Ray, Eric Mukherjee, and Dominic Machado, he played on a team that won the Saturday event of VCU Open 2010.

College Career
In his freshman year at Virginia, he played with Will Butler, Sarah Angelo, and David Seal on a dangerous team that won that year's Mid-Atlantic SCT and Penn Bowl. When a sundering of the fellowship resulted in UVA fielding depleted teams at both nationals, Matt led Virginia to a low finish at ICT and a better, top-bracket finish at 2011 ACF Nationals.

In the 2011-12 season, Virginia lost Will Butler but acquired two star recruits in Evan Adams and Tommy Casalaspi. Matt led this UVA team to a 1st place finish at the 2012 ICT and a 2nd place finish at 2012 ACF Nationals; the same year, he was the high scorer on the winning team at Chicago Open. When Virginia failed to take home either major title in 2012-13, he, Evan, and Tommy embarked on a successful program to avenge themselves on the quizbowl community. In the 2013-14 season, Bollinger led UVA to a national title sweep. In the process, Matt scored more powers individually than any other team at the 2013 ICT; he also led the field in scoring at the 2014 ACF Nationals. He was only the second person (after Andrew Yaphe in 1999) to both be the lead individual scorer and play on the winning team at both ICT and Nationals in the same year, as well as one of only three people to be the lead scorer at both tournaments in the same year at all and four to win both awards in a career.

Matt is a writer for, and the Chief Editor of, HSAPQ. His other editing experience includes assisting Kurtis Droge in editing ANGST, being brought on to edit literature and mythology for the 2011 NSC, editing several subjects for MOO, head-editing 2012 ACF Fall, and head-editing 2013 Chicago Open.

Jokes
Matt is the subject of a number of notable quizbowl running jokes, most of which were popularized by Mike Cheyne. These include:

* "That's a word, Mike Sorice!" -- Occurred during the NSC All-Star Round, when Bollinger responded to a bonus part on "hapticity" by inexplicably telling moderator Mike Sorice that it was a word.

* "Zeppelins" -- Occurred after Matt insisted that a NASAT tossup on zeppelins written by Mike Cheyne was extremely difficult to answer. "Zeppelins" are now sometimes used facetiously as benchmark of absurd difficulty.

* "Rizzoli and Isles" -- A reference to the unpopular TNT program. Carsten Gehring and Mike Cheyne have begun referring to Bollinger (Rizzoli) and Evan Adams (Isles) by this name. Evan Adams' recent decision to attend UVA for law school ensures this joke will likely still have some mileage. (n.b. - the debut of the similarly-titled TNT show Franklin & Bash naturally led to a brief search for quizbowl figures to arbitrarily assign the roles to. Results were inconclusive.)

* "True knowledge of the Pig War" -- Resulted from a long and tortuous argument about a NASAT tossup on "the United States-Canada border", in which Matt hypothesized that his teammate Jacob Wasserman was somehow going unrewarded for his long years of studying a minor nineteenth-century border conflict, or something. Now used to refer to any hyperbolic complaint about a question's failure to reward "real knowledge".

* Matt is also noted for his tendency to blush, a fact he was unaware of until an IRC conversation in which he claimed not to know what his own face looks like. He also once accidentally gave $11, rather than the $2 he presumably intended to give, to a panhandler at the Richmond Five Guys while staffing CULT; this resulted in an abortive, though highly amusing, attempt to chase the panhandler down the street to retrieve his ten-dollar bill.
Colonel By Secondary School (or simply CB for short) is a public school in Gloucester, Ontario, an eastern suburb of Ottawa. As the only English public school in the Ottawa area offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, Colonel By attracts bright students from across the city, giving the school a strong Quizbowl and Reach for the Top team.

Reach for the Top
Colonel By won its first city championship in 2005. It has remained a strong contender ever since, placing fourth at city regionals in 2012, and third in 2013. In 2014, Colonel By defeated Lisgar by 10 points in the final to claim the city championship.

Despite its participation in a bad Quizbowl format, Colonel By is a strong advocate for good, pyramidal Quizbowl. In the future, Colonel By intends to move away from Reach and focus entirely on good Quizbowl.

Quizbowl
Colonel By began attending quizbowl events starting in 2010. Presently, it is one of the few Canadian schools, along with Bell and Lisgar, that focus primarily on Quizbowl rather than Reach. Colonel By now attends almost every single nearby high school tournament, in addition to most nearby collegiate tournaments.

The team rose to prominence in the 2012-13 season, placing second and third at the 2013 NAQT Ontario Provincial Championship, with sophomores Ted Gan and Cameron Amini placing as the top two scorers. In the 2013-14 season, Colonel By broke into the top 50 of HSQBRank for the first time. At the 2014 Provincials, the team went 12-0 to win their first provincial Quizbowl title, with Cameron Amini finishing as the #1 scorer.

Under the leadership of Ted Gan and Cameron Amini, the 2013-2014 Colonel By team is the best Canadian high school team ever (even better than 2011 Lisgar) and will only improve for 2014-2015.

Lisgar Collegiate Institute is a public school in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Regularly placing highly in annual Ontario high school academic rankings, they are located several blocks south of the Parliament Buildings, and across the Rideau Canal from the University of Ottawa. A Reach for the Top team was established in the late 1990s under the guidance of Paul Paquet, and teams from Lisgar have been competitive at the city and provincial level nearly every year of existence. They won the 2008 Reach title by 5 points over UTS. The team has also been one of the most active Canadian participants in traditional tossup/bonus quizbowl in recent history, and is the first of a handful of Canadian teams to participate at either major American quizbowl championship.

Early History
Lisgar began playing Reach for the Top in the 1966-67 academic year. Lisgar occasionally appeared during the CBC years of Reach for the Top, including a team that featured future CBC personality Shelagh Rogers.

Though they had no established team at the time (and probably didn't pay membership fees to Reach in September), a team from Lisgar appeared in 1995 as part of the controversy surrounding Bell that year. Bell's school board was in a teacher's strike, and the team was considered illegal for most of the year. A team from Lisgar (part of a different Ottawa school board) was assembled for regional play and heralded by SchoolReach director Sandy Stewart as "the correct team" to go to provincials. A few court proceedings and lawyers later, Bell ended up competing at provincials.

Archived news article: "Quiz masters reach to court to stay on show" by Brenda Branswell of the Ottawa Citizen, April 27, 1995, page B2.

Reach for the Top
Regional
Lisgar has been among the top 3 teams in Ottawa at Reach for the Top since the late 1990s. Lisgar has won or shared the Richard Mageau Trophy, awarded to the Ottawa Schoolreach League champions, in 2001, 2004, 2006-2012. In both 2008 and 2009, Lisgar shared the title with Merivale, after question problems have created unresolvable disputes in two consecutive finals.

Provincial, Pre 2008
Lisgar has had mixed success at the Ontario provincial level. Though having qualified for the top ten playoff round in nine consecutive years (2001-2009), and ten out of eleven appearances all time, prior to the 2008 finals the team had won just one game. As of 2009, the team has a playoff record of 5-12. The team has regularly blamed these disappointments on the change in format between classroom-based round-robin matches and the televised playoffs. In 2008, Lisgar swept their round-robin division to take first seed for the playoffs, and would go on to defeat South Secondary (twice) and Vincent Massey, before losing the final game to UTS. By advancing to the final game, Lisgar became the first school to qualify for both the NAQT HSNCT and the Reach for the Top National Finals.

Provincial, Post 2008
After Lisgar's Nationals run, most of the team had left and only freshmen and sophomores remained, giving way to a fresh group of new people. In 2009, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs to Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute. In 2010, the team failed to qualify for the provincial playoffs, the first time in team history. In 2011, Lisgar came fourth after the first day and won two playoff games and controversially lost in the semifinals to UTS. However, the controversy coupled with a third place finish meant a nationals berth after a team from Saskatchewan dropped out. The year after, a second place finish after the first day led to an acceptable 4th place result.

National
Despite their overwhelming success at the provincial and regional level, Lisgar has only appeared at the national finals once in their eleven-year existence. Lisgar won the 2008 Reach championship, defeating UTS in the final by 5 points. See 2008 Lisgar.

In 2011, Lisgar was invited to Nationals as the 3rd Ontario team after the Saskatchewan Provincial Champion dropped out. Lisgar finished 3rd after losing to Centennial CVI in the semi-finals.

Quizbowl
Regional
Lisgar was one of the first Canadian teams to begin participating in tossup/bonus quizbowl. A team from Lisgar won the first three high school quizbowl events in Canada, though that streak was broken in 2008 when Merivale won that year's Ottawa Quizbowl Tournament. They often submit multiple teams, forming 5 teams of the 11-team field for the 2008 OQT. Lisgar won the Ottawa Quizbowl tournament from 2009-2012, the latter two years saw the first and second place being won by Lisgar.

Provincial
Lisgar attended the Ontario Provincial Championships in April 2010 and finished 1st and 4th out of a pool of 21 teams. The A team won a one-game final against their provincial rivals UTS. The B team lost the first game of a disadvantaged third-place game to Woburn. In 2011, Lisgar A finished first outright. Lisgar B finished tied for second after the preliminaries lost a tiebreak and an advantaged finals to drop to fourth place overall. In 2012, Lisgar finished first outright.

National
They have qualified for the HSNCT every year since 2005. Lisgar reached the playoffs in 2006 and 2007, with captain Jamie Cooper earning All-Star honours each time. They did not attend the 2008 HSNCT after qualifying for Reach for the Top Nationals. In 2009, the team finished 5-5. In 2010, Lisgar sent two teams to the 2010 HSNCT, with their A team finishing 6-4 and their B team finished 4-6. In 2011 the sent a team to PACE NSC which finished 2-3 4-1 2-3 for 28th out of 60 teams. They also sent a team of HSNCT which finished 5-5 after losing their last game by 5 points, just missing the playoffs. In 2012, the team did not attend any nationals event due to financial issues.

HSNCT Results
* 2006: 7-6
* 2007: 8-5
* 2008: 5-5
* 2010: Lisgar A: 7-5, Lisgar B: 4-6
* 2011: 5-5

Open events
The team has also competed open-level tournaments, competing in the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 incarnations of the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament. In 2008, the team had the top two individual scorers, Nevin Hotson and Jeff Gao, respectively. The team formed an alumni team for 2008 VETO, and did so again in 2009, along with a team of current students. VETO 2009 was thought to be a simple Guerrilla style tournament with write-in questions, as exemplified in past tournaments, however because of the editing of Jerry Vinokurov, the tournament was made to reflect an mACF format. Some of the teams in attendance felt that this change disadvantaged the Lisgar high school because of a perceived increase in difficulty.

In October 2009, Lisgar sent a team to THUNDER and went 4-4 against a university playing field.

The rivalry has (temporarily?) ended with their graduation, save for a looming showdown at the 2014 Chicago Open.

Miscellaneous
* As calculated by Bollinger, his career record against Jackson is 16 wins, 14 losses.
* Bollinger and Jackson played CO History Doubles 2012 on the same team
Patrick Liaohttps://www.qbwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Jordan_Palmer&diff=14942Jordan Palmer2013-01-09T00:45:58Z
Patrick Liao: fuck no gadgets

Harvard is a large private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It participates in ACF, mACF, and NAQT tournaments.

History
Jeff Johnson led Harvard to a series of successes in the second half of the nineties, retiring after their 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the 1997 ICT and ACF tournaments.

Harvard performed the notable feat of qualifying three teams for the 2000 NAQT ICT at nearby BU with a total of five players. (Harvard hosted the SCT and had very few people available). Two of the teams consisted of Jeff Johnson and Vik Vaz playing solo.

The club was quite large, sending as many as seven teams to local tournaments through the end of the nineties. A preciptious decline followed.

Vik Vaz, Dan Suzman, Jim Davis, and Frank Kelly won the ICT undergrad title in 2003. Harvard (Dan Suzman, Paco Brito, Jim Davis) returned to the undergrad final in 2004 before falling to Illinois. The same year, Harvard's Division II team (Sarah Watson, Noam Lerer, Eric Nielsen, Alexandra Helprin) finished third after losing in a tiebreaker. Harvard (Dan Suzman, Frank Kelly, Will Rooke) took third in the undergraduate division in 2005 after losing a tiebreaker to Carlton. In 2006, Harvard again qualified one undergrad team, which registered but couldn't be bothered to show up. People were rightfully pretty angry.

But Harvard's all-freshman Division II team that year (Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Sam Lederer, John Lesieutre, Adam Hallowell) came on their own and took second place after falling to Stanford in the final. In 2007, Harvard's all-sophomore team (Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Julia Schlozman, John Lesieutre, Adam Hallowell) placed second after losing to Carlton in the undergraduate final. As juniors, that same team won the Undergraduate title at the 2008 ICT. In 2009, a Harvard undergraduate team consisting of Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Ted Gioia, Andy Watkins, and Dallas Simons defeated Minnesota in a tight two-game final to repeat as ICT undergraduate champions, also finishing in third place overall. The team of Andy Watkins, Dallas Simons, Dennis Sun, and Bruce Arthur followed this up with a DI win in 2010; while Watkins, Simons, Ted Gioia, and Stephen Liu won Division I again over Minnesota in 2011.

Tournaments
In addition to occasionally hosting ACF or NAQT tournaments, Harvard runs an annual high school tournament, the Harvard Fall Tournament. Under Andy's leadership, the team hosted two packet-submission regular-difficulty T-Party events and two housewritten nationals-difficulty Harvard Internationals.

Media Attention
In late 2008, the Harvard quizbowl team became the center of two articles by student journalist Christian B. Flow, who practiced and traveled with the team for a number of weeks. These articles were extremely well received by the Quiz Bowl community.

The team has also been one of the most active Canadian participants in traditional tossup/bonus quizbowl in recent history, and the only Canadian team to participate at either major American quizbowl championship.

After Lisgar's Nationals run, most of the team had left and only freshmen and sophmores remained, giving way to a fresh group of new people.

Lisgar won the 2008 Reach championship, defeating UTS in the final.

National
They have qualified for the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 HSNCTs, despite not attending in 2008 because of Reach for the Top Nationals. Lisgar reached the playoffs in 2006 and 2007, with captain Jamie Cooper earning All-Star honors each time. They remain mildly bitter about their 310-300 loss to Troy in the second playoff round of the 2007 HSNCT. They did not attend the 2008 HSNCT after qualifying for Reach Nationals. In 2009, the team finished 5-5. They have been the sole representation from Canada at either the NAQT HSNCT or the PACE NSC, and are among only a few Canadian high school teams to play south of the border. In 2010, Lisgar sent two teams to the 2010 HSNCT, with their A team finishing 6-4 and their B team a respectable 4-6.

HSNCT Results
* 2006: 7-6
* 2007: 8-5
* 2008: 5-5
* 2010: Lisgar A: 7-5, Lisgar B: 4-6
* 2011: 5-5

The team has also been one of the most active Canadian participants in traditional tossup/bonus quizbowl in recent history, and the only Canadian team to participate at either major American quizbowl championship.

After Lisgar's Nationals run, most of the team had left and only freshmen and sophmores remained, giving way to a fresh group of new people.

Lisgar won the 2008 Reach championship, defeating UTS in the final.

* 2006: 7-6
* 2007: 8-5
* 2008: 5-5
* 2010: Lisgar A: 7-5, Lisgar B: 4-6
* 2011: 5-5

The Ontario Quiz Bowl Association (or ONQBA) is an organization founded in June 2011 to promote quizbowl in Ontario to students of secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

The Ontario Quizbowl Association (ONQBA) has made an agreement with the Guelph trivia club to take over organization of the provincial tournament. The organization has a website and newsletter, which advertises tournaments, profile university clubs and list ONQBA decisions, and continue school-targeted (ie: the newsletter and other mailings) and student-targeted (ie: Facebook events and groups) outreach. The ONQBA use any surplus end-of-year funds to support Ontario teams attending national tournaments in the United States including PACE NSC, NAQT HSNCT and with the hope that one day, they can support a NASAT team.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the ONQBA becan to certify tournaments. ONQBA offer different discounts at provincials for schools that hosted and/or did well and/or participated a certified tournament. They will certify any academic quizbowl tournament that has already been certified by PACE and/or NAQT and/or uses a recognized student written event (e.g. SCOP Novice, Early Autumn Collegiate Novice, GSAC) and has an ONQBA member in its staff as a check to make sure the tournament runs smoothly. An ONQBA member must staff in at least one event every year and if applicable, vote at least once a year in an ONQBA procedure. Any events that don't meet these criteria will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

More information on the organization, upcoming and past events, and past editions of the newsletter can be found on their website.

Patrick began playing Reach for the Top at Lisgar in grade 9, where he went to Reach for the Top Nationals as a spare on a powerful team that defeated UTS to be national champion. The following year saw him be on the team as a regular, as Lisgar tied for first at regionals and came in the top 10 at provincials. In Patrick's grade 11 year, he captained a Lisgar team consisting of three other grade 11s and a grade 10 to first in Ottawa regionals.

Later, Patrick played on the Lisgar team that made HSNCT in 2009, 2010, 2011.
In Patrick's grade 11 year, he captained a Lisgar team consisting of three other grade 11s and a grade 10 to first in Ottawa regionals but failed to finish in the top 10 at the provincal tournament.

Later, Patrick played on the Lisgar team that made HSNCT in 2009, 2010, 2011.

In formats with bounceback, bonus parts incorrectly answered by the team who answered the tossup are given to the opposition. This supposedly leads to tighter games, and certainly to less complaining about a player's pet topic coming up in a bonus for the other team, who then got zero points on said bonus.

PACE's NSC tournament notably uses bouncebacks.
Lisgar hosted a house written tournament in 2009 which used bouncebacks.

Variants of quizbowl in Canada have been around since the 1960s. Quizbowl, referring to a tossup/bonus format, is more widespread amongst universities than high schools, which use Reach for the Top, except in areas like Ottawa and Toronto where schools like Lisgar, UTS, and Woburn are increasingly attending quizbowl events at all levels.

High School
High school quizbowl supposedly first appeared with the CBC radio show I.Q. in the early 1960s. The format was loosely based on the American radio version of College Bowl. The show was canceled in 1964 and Reach took root soon after.

A quizbowl tournament catered to high school students came in 2005 as an NAQT event hosted by Ottawa. It has continued each year since, but with low attendance. Attempts to run a similar event in Vancouver, Toronto, New Brunswick, and Sudbury have all failed due to low interest.

Some high school teams have played in events catered to universities, such as VETO and the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament.

A provincial-level tournament was held by Guelph in April 2010, which involved 21 teams.

Lisgar has sent teams to four HSNCTs.

University
While some Canadian universities have "trivia clubs" that only play Trivial Pursuit or watch Jeopardy!, most clubs play quizbowl. Notably, there is no Reach for the Top available in post-secondary education (unless you are a college in Quebec exploiting rule #1 of SchoolReach).

ACF
Based on its history, Queen's was the sole Canadian team to participate in ACF events through most of the 1990s. In the 2000s, there has usually been at least one ACF event every year in British Columbia. In eastern Canada, ACF Fall was hosted by Brock in 2005 and by McMaster in 2008.

College Bowl
Queen's and Simon Fraser were regular participants in earlier years, though neither team currently plays College Bowl. According to the CBI website, there have been teams from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Toronto (before the modern team).

NAQT
Of the four major U.S.-based formats, NAQT has been the most successful in Canada. The earliest results on CAQL's website list tournament questions sources as "NAQT + Canadian content" . SCTs have been held in Canada every year since 2000 (except 2002).

NAQT has been accused of making concessions to Canadians (such as adding high levels of Canadian content in questions or giving 2 ICT invites to the Vancouver SCT) to boost their Canadian market.

The 2008 SCTs saw no less than five former Reach champions playing in Division II, suggesting that maybe Canadians like NAQT because it's the closest collegiate thing to Reach. Two former champions (Peter Burton and Jacob Baskin) led in individual scoring at their respective SCTs.

TRASH/trash
There has usually been a TRASH Regionals in either BC or southwestern Ontario (or both) with moderate attendance. There is not much in the way of independent trash, although the OHT is half pop culture and there is often a trash singles event after Provincial Bowl.

Independent events
There have been several one-time events in Canada: usually in BC, but Mackenzie Bowl at UWO in 1999 attracted 14 teams. However, the modern Canadian circuit calendar includes three regular events:

Provincial Bowl (October)
Organized by Brock Stephenson. It began in 2002 as BC Bowl, and since 2003 has included a more popular mirror, Ontario Bowl. In 2005, McGill hosted a third mirror, Quebec Bowl. The BC Bowl site has waned in significance in recent years, especially after Stephenson moved to Ontario for a work placement. Ontario Bowl, meanwhile, has grown in attendance each year. Ontario Bowl is often held at a first-time host site (McMaster, Ottawa, Brock/McGill, Carleton, Toronto).

Hybrid Tournament (March)
The Ottawa Hybrid Tournament is organized by Ben Smith and other members of Ottawa. It began in 2005 as a quick cash grab for funds to travel to an ICT, but has steadily gone down in price and up in quality. It is sometimes mirrored by UBC and Georgia. Its 16-team field at the Ottawa site in 2007 was the largest at a Canadian independent event until Ontario Bowl also had 16 the following season.

VETO (July)
Organized by Peter McCorquodale. The Vancouver Estival Trivia Open (or VETO Escapes to Toronto, Ontario) has been held annually in Vancouver (and often at a Toronto mirror) since 1999. In 2002, it converted to a "guerrilla" format in which there is no central editing. In recent years, VETO has been ridiculed by American teams for either a) teams who don't ask for advice and write bad questions, or b) teams who do ask for advice, then ignore it.

Reach for the Top is the dominant high school quiz competition in Canada. Technically a form of quizbowl, it has a larger sports distribution than other academic quizbowl formats, contains more hoses, and is composed almost entirely of speed-check questions which are often non-pyramidal. It is also more expensive than alternatives like NAQT.

French students usually play Genies en herbe, while university students play in the quizbowl format.

Gameplay
The majority of questions in Reach for the Top are approximately the length of quizbowl bonus questions (1-2 sentences), and are worth, for the most part, 10 points each. Interruption of the questions for early guesses are not only allowed but also encouraged, as the game is based heavily on speed. If a team buzzes in and answer a question incorrectly, the opposing team has approximately 3-5 seconds to consult and form an answer. Consultation is permitted at almost all times in Reach for the Top (see "Shootouts" and "Assigned" for exceptions). There are no Negs or Powers in Reach, although negs (-5) appeared in the 2007 Nationals for the first time.

Categories
Snapstart/Snapout/Open
Forming the bulk of Reach for the Top questions, these consist of 1-2 sentence questions open to both teams and are worth ten points each. Snapout/Snapstart categories take place at the beginning and end of each round respectively, and the subject of each question varies (i.e. none are linked by a category). "Open" categories are, mostly, worth 40 points in total, and consist of 4 questions all linked by one similar category (e.g. "40 point open on architects"); it is open to both teams.

"20 Point Special"
Like an open question (see last category), but the answer often requires 2 answers in one (e.g. Q: Name both years in which a player's strike or owner's lockout was responsible for the cancellation of some or all of the games in an NHL season. A: 1994-95 and 2004-05.) In other cases, the 20 point special can require one very long answer, for example, the provincial motto of Newfoundland, Quaerite primum regnum Dei

Shootout
A maximum of 12 questions are posed in this category. Once one player has answered a question correctly, they may no longer answer any questions. This player is now "out". Once one team has every one of its 4 players "out", they gain 40 points, and the other team gains 0. Consultation is forbidden at all times in this category. Concerns that have arisen with this category include A) 12 questions are needed to generate 40 points and B) Both teams can have 3 players out with one question left, which one team may barely answer correctly on speed, giving them all 40 points, and thus a very important swing on a very little difference between teams.

Chain Snappers
Similar to a snapstart/snapout, chain snappers involve the answer to one question forming the topic of the succeeding question. As a result, the best and fastest teams can often answer the next question with only 3-4 words read.

Who am I/What am I
Who am I/What am I questions consist of four clues with decreasing point value, beginning with a (usually vague) opening question. If answered correctly on this question, that team gains 40 points. If neither team guesses correctly, the answer is not read, and a slightly less ambiguous clue worth 30 points is read. This continues for two more questions (worth 20 and 10 points respectively), until, if no team is able to give the correct answer, the answer is read. Unlike Good Quizbowl, the first clue does not provide only one possible answer. The 40-point question is often described as being written as though "an expert in that field" would be unable to be absolutely sure of the correct answer, and as a result, can often trigger highly inaccurate guesses, or in the case of non-competitive teams, non-sensical answers which are made to incite laughs and in doing so, delay the game. The 40-point clue can vary in difficulty from completely, improbably difficult, (almost to the a point where one questions the point of it; e.g. "This country is located in Europe." or "He was born in 1685.") to reasonably difficult.

Assigned
Worth 80 points in total, this category consists of questions posed to specific individuals. One team, designated "Team A", will have each of its team members asked one question. If answered incorrectly, the player sitting directly across from that player will have an opportunity to answer that question. Once team A has had all of its players asked a question, team B's players are then asked questions one-by-one in a similar fashion. All of the questions relate to one category (e.g. European national capitals). Consultation is forbidden.

Team Questions
These questions work similarly to tossup/bonus questions. One question is posed to both teams. The team that correctly answers the question has an opportunity to answer three more questions. The only differences between that and quizbowl are that the "tossup" question is usually very short and very easy and the bonus questions (actually called bonus) are related in topic to the "tossup" question.

List
Worth 50 points, this category involves teams alternating in turns to complete a list. Both teams have an opportunity to buzzz in for the first answer. After each question is answered correctly the other team has an opportunity to give an answer. Once a team gets a question wrong, they may no longer answer.
e.g. List all of the professional teams that Wayne Gretzky played for.
Team A (buzzes in): "Edmonton Oilers" - Correct
Team B: "New York Rangers" - Correct
Team A: "St. Louis Blues" - Correct
Team B: "Philadelphia Flyers" - Incorrect
Team A: "Los Angeles Kings & Indianapolis Racers" - Correct x 2

Canadian Tournament Play
The modern Reach for the Top season begins with SchoolReach - regional leagues playing in classrooms. For most provinces, a "region" encompasses the entire province, while BC and Ontario are divided into smaller regions either for league play (in BC) or to serve as qualifiers for a provincial tournament (in Ontario). A few provinces have their playoff matches televised. The territories, Saskatchewan, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador do not currently have provincial tournaments; any schools from those regions may participate in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, respectively.

Depending on participation levels, provincial tournaments will qualify either one or two teams to the national tournament, held for the past several years in Edmonton. The national tournament consists of an in-classroom round-robin, followed by televised playoffs.

Most regions offer an "Intermediate" division tournament open to freshmen and sophomores, but there is no framework for an Intermediate national tournament. "Intermediate" would likely be higher than a "Junior" division (presumably for middle school), but a middle school tournament does not exist. Reach attempted to start a university tournament in the early 2000s, but some NAQT tournaments had already taken root at the time.

There are a few Reach (or Reach-style) tournaments held during the year that are independent of the qualification process to Nationals. New Brunswick has 5-6 per year around the province, Toronto has had a few in recent years, and Lisgar CI held a tournament in Ottawa in 2007. Nevertheless, the number of tournaments is much smaller than availability in several US regions.

Rule 1 Issues
Rule #1 of Reach for the Top states:

"Any student who is 19 or under at the beginning of the school year and has been continuously enrolled in a Secondary School is eligible to play both SCHOOLREACH and REACH FOR THE TOP."

This rule originally accommodated the 5-year high school system in Ontario, which ended with students entering in 1999. This rule has since not changed, even with Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador having 3-year high schools. As such, some players and teams have exploited this loophole to various degrees of success:

* Quebec's league was established in the 2001-02 season. CEGEPs, which have high school graduates, are allowed to compete under the rule, and a CEGEP represents Quebec at Nationals nearly every year. Royal West Academy, a high school, broke this trend by qualifying for Nationals in 2008.

* Andy Saunders played Reach For The Top for six seasons in high school due to Rule #1.

* A player from Leaside celebrated his 19th birthday at the Ontario provincial tournament his team ended up winning in 2005. They failed to win Nationals, however.

* The captain of 2004 St. George's was in his fifth year of Reach, and won the national championship. What was particularly ironic was the fact that the coach was quite vocal about fifth-year Ontario teams winning Nationals throughout the 1990s.

It should be noted that several Ontario teams have managed to win the national championships in the 4-year system.

Championship Disputes
Since the conversion from a CBC program to SchoolReach, there have been incidents that have left a national title in dispute by some parties:

*1989 Tagwi: Tagwi won an early match because of a (possibly) incorrect ruling over the ingredients of borscht. The team got screwed over in the end, though. They never got a trophy because of a dispute between Reach and the old CBC champions, and their scheduled exhibition match with the NAC champions was cancelled because a party in the US (the team? the TV crew? Chip Beall?) didn't want to travel to Canada.

*1995 Fredericton: In the aftermath of issues surrounding the 1995 Bell team, a team from Lisgar that won the zone match to earn a berth in provincials never got the opportunity to play. How well the Lisgar team would have fared is now only speculative.

*2008 Lisgar: Down by 5 points, the runner-up team from UTS claimed they buzzed in at the end of the game before the time alarm went off. It had to go to a video review, and Reach judged in favour of Lisgar. A small edit war erupted on Wikipedia between anonymous Toronto IPs and quizbowlers apparently "sympathetic" to Lisgar over how the championship should be listed in the article.

*2009 London Central: London Central's opponents in the finals from Kennebecasis were not informed by either Reach For The Top or TVO that there would be a change in format for the final game until minutes before the game began. The team from Kennebecasis had also never played using TVOs format (which eliminates the shootout and includes relatively easy questions among other changes) before. The London Central team had played using TVOs format two weeks earlier for the Ontario Provincials, giving them an advantage for the finals. The national tournament was also notable for the recycling of several questions during the round robin portion which could have also affected the outcome of the tournament in terms of seeding the teams for the playoffs.

Notable Participants
University of Toronto Schools (often abbreviated to UTS) is a private secondary school located in downtown Toronto. The school has been competitive for many years, recently becoming the first team to win successive national Reach for the Top championships in 2003. The team is also notable for being coached by Globe and Mail cryptic crossword writer Fraser Simpson. They compete in the Toronto Schoolreach League to qualify for the Ontario provincial championships.

'Grudge' with Lisgar
UTS has, perhaps undeservedly, come to be seen by Lisgar as their nemesis, after being responsible for Lisgar's early elimination at two recent Ontario provincial tournaments. In 2006, 9th-seed UTS beat 2nd-seed Lisgar by 10 points, despite a last-minute rally by Lisgar during the lightning round. The following year, the confrontation began with Lisgar and UTS tying for fifth place in the playoff rankings. The issue was decided by a competition between team captains, with UTS winning the tiebreaker. Lisgar received the first-round wildcard, awarded to the round's highest-scoring loser, after being solidly beaten by UTS, and then proceeded to miss the second round wildcard (after being solidly beaten again, this time by eventual national champion London Central) due to UTS losing their own match with a score 20 points higher than Lisgar's.

In 2008, Lisgar and UTS were first and second seed respectively, which meant that they did not play until the final game, after both teams won their preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal games. Lisgar performed better than they had in previous games, keeping their score close to UTS for most of the games and even leading by thirty points midway through the game. However, UTS closed the gap and proceeded to dominate the closing lightning round, thus earning the Ontario title.

At the national tournament in Edmonton, the two teams once again faced off, with UTS winning in a round-robin matchup by a considerable margin. Eventually, both teams won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches to advance to the final game, facing each other. Lisgar prevailed 420-415, defeating UTS for the first time, bringing the Toronto school's historical record against Lisgar to 8-1.

At the April 2010 provincial NAQT tournament in Guelph, UTS defeated Lisgar 325-255 in the round robin. Both teams finished the day with 9-1 records, and played each other in a one game final for the gold medal and further bragging rights. Lisgar decisively won by a score of 395-175. This was only the second time in their history that they lost to Lisgar.

In the 2009-2010 season, there seemed to be little enmity between the two teams, and they got along quite well: half of the Lisgar team sat at the UTS table for the 2010 Ontario Reach Provincial Gala.

The team has also been one of the most active Canadian participants in traditional tossup/bonus quizbowl in recent history, and the only Canadian team to participate at either major American quizbowl championship.

Lisgar has won or shared the Richard Mageau Trophy, awarded to the Ottawa Schoolreach League champions, in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. In both 2008 and 2009, Lisgar shared the title with Merivale, after question problems have created unresolvable disputes in two consecutive finals. In 2010, however, Lisgar won by 10 points against Gloucester in the semifinals without controversy and decisively defeated Merivale in the finals.

Provincial
In 2009, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs to Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute. In 2010, the team failed to qualify for the provincial playoffs.

National
Despite their overwhelming success at the provincial and regional level, Lisgar has only appeared at the national finals once in their eleven-year existence. Lisgar won the 2008 Reach championship, defeating UTS in the final. See 2008 Lisgar.

Quizbowl
Lisgar was one of the first Canadian teams to begin participating in tossup/bonus quizbowl. A team from Lisgar won the first three high school quizbowl events in Canada, though that streak was broken in 2008 when Merivale won that year's Ottawa Quizbowl Tournament. They often submit multiple teams, forming 5 teams of the 11-team field for the 2008 OQT.

Lisgar attended the Ontario Provincial Championships in April 2010 and finished 1st and 4th out of a pool of 21 teams. The A team won a one-game final against their provincial rivals UTS. The B team lost the first game of a disadvantaged third-place game to Woburn.

* 2006: 7-6
* 2007: 8-5
* 2008: 5-5
* 2010: Lisgar A: 7-5, Lisgar B: 4-6

Lisgar Open
Lisgar hosted its first Reach for the Top tournament on December 1st, 2007, the 07 Lisgar Open. The event was notable for being one of few, if not the only, pre-qualifier tournament in Ontario. The Lisgar Open drew 13 teams from 7 schools, including Merivale, Colonel By, Tagwi, University of Toronto Schools, St. Joseph Secondary School (Mississauga), Gananoque and Lisgar itself. UTS finished in first place, followed by Merivale A in 2nd, Lisgar A in 3rd and Gananoque A in 4th.

The team hosted the 09 Lisgar Open in October 2009, a house-written tossup/bonus quizbowl tournament with some elements of Reach.
The team will host a house-written Reach tournament in February 2011, mainly as an introduction to new players to the high school Reach circuit.
The University of Ottawa is a bilingual university in Ottawa, Ontario. Ben Smith has run the "Trivia Club" since he founded it in the 2003-04 season. The club sometimes links with Carleton University, also in Ottawa.

Early History
There are tournament results showing a team from Ottawa participating in several quizbowl tournaments in Canada in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, no remaining students or club status from that time were apparent upon the establishment of the official club.

Modern History
The current club was established in 2003 amidst several other programs starting up around Canada in the same year. Ben Smith, Michelle Bishop, Jeff Gordon, and Philippe Marchand were the original members. Gordon was president in the early years due to a quirky (and now unenforced) rule stating that U of O clubs and their presidents must be bilingual, although French quizbowl has never been played at Ottawa. The team's debut at the 2004 NAQT Canadian SCT would have been disastrous if not for the last-minute arrival of Tamara Vardomskaya; even then, only fifth place could be mustered. Ottawa has participated in the 2005 ICT and 2006 ICT, finishing in the bottom bracket both times. Smith ran most of the club, though he has not served as president because of language issues.

Current Club
Almost all of the original members had graduated by 2008, leaving a void to be filled by a new generation of freshmen. Under new president Britney Castleman, membership ballooned to 30 players in 2009-10, and Ottawa participated in 9 tournaments that season, culminating in a 12th place finish at the DII ICT.

Hosted Tournaments
Two annual tournaments are under the banner of Ottawa: the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament, and the Ottawa Quizbowl Tournament.

The OHT is a packet-submission hybrid tournament originally conceived in 2005 as a cash grab to fund a trip to the ICT. Due to popularity, the tournament continued, although with more packet discounts and less intention of profit. While the tournament will remain open to all teams, there were foul cries in 2007 when a "professional player" walked over a high school team.

The OQT, first run in 2005, is the first quizbowl-format tournament for high schools in Canada. It uses NAQT questions. Lisgar won from 2005 to 2007, 2009, and 2010, while Merivale won in 2008.
