Shan Kothari played for Plymouth and Michigan State before embarking on a PhD at the University of Minnesota.

Known for his extremely deep knowledge of music, world cultures, social sciences, and ecology/evolutionary biology, Shan has led Minnesota to high finishes including 4th place at the 2019 ICT and 3rd place at 2019 ACF Nationals. Along with Matt Bollinger, Matt Weiner, and Adam Silverman, he was on the team that won the 2018 Chicago Open.

He has made major contributions to numerous sets, including the 2012 MSU/Delaware high school housewrite, VCU Open 2014, DEES, MUT 2015 and 2016, Missouri Open 2015, the 2016 NSC, and 2018's PIANO/Minnesota Open.

Scattergories is a series of very hard, whimsical open side events written by Will Nediger. There have been three iterations so far, running in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively. The third of these was written in collaboration with Jaimie Carlson. Players have highly praised all three Scattergories sets, and Will and Kim are planning a fourth set in the near future.

Since all Scattergories sets are avowedly vanity tournaments, they skew towards things Will likes, but otherwise cover a wide range of topics in literature, arts, thought, and a lot of 'mixed' (sensu NAQT) questions.
Chris Heffner was a quiz bowl player at Michigan State. He participated in Minnesota quiz bowl for his entire high school career at Wayzata, until he made the great jump over Wisconsin to MSU. He supported bad quizbowl through his enjoyment of geography, current events, and politics, and was known to complain that all non-NAQT question sets have "too much literature." He later completed a PhD in linguistics at Maryland, where he did not play quiz bowl.
This article describes the Quiz Bowl Team at the University of Minnesota. For high school Quiz Bowl in the state of Minnesota, see Minnesota Quiz Bowl Alliance.

The University of Minnesota is a four-year public university located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Minnesota is an active team that participates in nearly all regional tournaments and regularly sends teams to ICT and ACF Nationals.

Long known as a CBI powerhouse, in 2008 the team achieved the unique feat of qualifying teams for the playoffs at both CBI and ACF Nationals, on the same day. Due to an amusing decision in the marketing department, the club has sweatshirts claiming to have won seven national titles from 2004-2011, a fact that neglects mentioning there are two national tournaments (three if you count Division II ICT, which they did) and that a majority of the 'titles' are for undergraduate champion.

The club maintains an international collegiate contact list for clubs in the US, Canada, the UK, and Pakistan which is updated by the current president based off of information obtained from regional teams. The team also host pop culture and special events trivia tournaments for the larger campus community, including serving as on-stage entertainment before OK Go took the stage in 2011.

Tournaments
From 2008 to 2012, Minnesota, or some contingent of recent graduates, produced and hosted Minnesota Open in the fall. The team also wrote the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament or MUT every spring until 2016. In 2012, MUT was written in conjunction with Illinois.

The team hosts several high school and college tournaments each year, including GINVIT, and MUT.

Current Players
Current Minnesota players include PhD students Sam Bailey and Shan Kothari, law students Peter Estall and Evan Brown, and a large contingent of undergraduates, including Brian Kalathiveetil, John Waldron, Arun Balakrishna, Janet Wang, Tora Husar, Joe Kammann, and Nibir Sarma.
Geoffrey Chen is a current senior at Wayzata, dual-enrolled at Minnesota for the 2018-19 year. He is renowned for his extraordinary skills as a science player, in which capacity he helped the Minnesota A team reach 4th place at 2019 ICT and 3rd place at 2019 ACF Nationals. He and his teammates Tora Husar and Joe Kammann also propelled Wayzata to high finishes at 2018 HSNCT and 2018 NSC.

Current Minnesota players include PhD students Sam Bailey and Shan Kothari, law students Peter Estall and Evan Brown, and a large contingent of undergraduates, including Brian Kalathiveetil, John Waldron, Arun Balakrishna, Janet Wang, Tora Husar, Joe Kamann, and Nibir Sarma.

Tournaments
Minnesota, or some contingent of recent graduates, produces and hosts Minnesota Open in the fall. The team also writes the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament or MUT every spring. In 2012, MUT was written in conjunction with Illinois.

The team hosts several high school and college tournaments each year, including GINVIT, and MUT.

Missouri Open is a name given to three distinct tournaments.

The first tournament called Missouri Open was held on June 6, 2009 at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. It was a high-difficulty packet submission event edited by Charlie Dees, Shantanu Jha, and Auroni Gupta . A 2010 edition of similar difficulty was meant to occur via a mirror of Sun N' Fun XI but was canceled because Charlie Dees was unable to be in Columbia the day of the tournament.

The second tournament called Missouri Open, a distinct event, was a non-packet-submission, ACF Fall-difficulty tournament written and edited by Itamar Naveh-Benjamin for use on July 6, 2013 . It was also mirrored on the East Coast at Virginia Tech.

The third tournament called Missouri Open was a regular difficulty tournament with NAQT-length questions written by Will Alston, Itamar Naveh-Benjamin, Shan Kothari, Ewan Macaulay, and Rohith Nagari in fall 2015. It was mirrored at several sites across the country.

VCU Open is an annual summer open tournament hosted and written by VCU and its affiliates, including Matt Weiner.

2007
The tournament was held in March as a fundraising venture for VCU's trip to the ICT. It mirrored the very easy Illinois Novice set in order to attract more ordinary college teams and even high school teams.

2008
The tournament moved to the summer to signal its true open difficulty level. It was written by Matt Weiner with science by Billy Beyer. The tournament was paused during Round 9 so Mike Bentley could run Gunpei Yokoi, allowing for the last playoff round's writing to be finished.

2009
The difficulty of VCU Open was toned down somewhat, and it involved some semi-impromptu packet submissions due to fears that the set would not be otherwise completed.

2010
VCU Open 2010 was expanded to two sets and co-written by Michigan and UCSD. The largest writing portion, and the overall editing, came from VCU's Evan Adams. The Saturday portion of VCU Open had a difficulty level between ACF Regionals and ACF Nationals while the more beginner-friendly Sunday portion had a difficulty level between PACE NSC and ACF Regionals. Everyone played both sets regardless, and much fun was had by all.

2011
VCU Open 2011 consisted of an academic tournament, on Saturday, and a trash tournament, on Sunday, both hosted at Maryland. The academic tournament was written by Evan Adams (all non-science except social science and philosophy tossups), Cody Voight (all science) and Matt Weiner (social science and philosophy tossups) and the trash tournament was written by Mike Cheyne and George Berry.

2012
Due to a late start in writing and the prospects of acquiring rooms at VCU looking dim, the tournament was not held in 2012.

2013
VCU Open 2013 was written by Cody Voight (science, music, film, geography), Matt Weiner (non-American literature, religion, philosophy, social science), Daniel Hothem (all history), and George Berry (painting, non-film misc. arts, trash, current events), with freelance contributions from Auroni Gupta (American literature, other mythology) and Sarah Angelo (Greco-Roman mythology).

2014
VCU Open 2014 was written by Matt Weiner, Mike Bentley, Sinan Ulusoy, Shan Kothari, Dan Puma, and Jordan Brownstein. It was somewhat coolly received, in part because many of the questions were written the night before the tournament.
Results
Division 1
Virginia (Evan Adams, Matt Bollinger, Tommy Casalaspi and David Seal) beat Illinois (Greg Baboukis, Billy Busse, Ike Jose, and Austin Listerud) 545-150 in the first game of an advantaged final. Third place went to Yale (Matt Jackson, Kevin Koai, John Lawrence, and Ashvin Srivatsa).

The Division 1 All-Stars were as follows:
* Auroni Gupta, Cal-San Diego (undergraduate)
* Will Butler, Georgia Tech
* Trevor Davis, Carnegie Mellon
* Eric Mukherjee, Penn
* Neil Gurram, MIT (undergraduate)
* Chris Ray, Maryland
* Matthew Bollinger, Virginia (undergraduate)
* Andrew Hart, Minnesota

In addition, Ike Jose was the last remaining undergraduate All-Star.

Illinois was awarded the Division 1 Undergraduate championship, but it was later realized that Greg Baboukis was in his fifth year of SCT/ICT play, making them ineligible. The next highest placing undergraduate teams were MIT and Ohio State, who should have played for the UG championship. Even later, the Undergraduate title was given to Ohio State outright, after it was revealed that MIT's Josh Alman had been cheating.

Division 2
Harvard took the D2 crown after beating New York University. Michigan State finished third.

The tournament All-Stars in D2 are as follows:
* Alex Gerten, Wisconsin
* Peter Estall, Minnesota
* Alex Gross, Delaware
* Dennis Beeby, Ottawa
* Andrew Nadig, Carnegie Mellon
* Matt Messana, Notre Dame
