==Tournament Events==

Reflecting the new demographics of high school quizbowl following the rise of [[NAQT]], this tournament was dominated by teams from Texas and the Georgia-South Carolina corridor. Three Houston-area teams took spots in the New Orleans semifinals, where [[2001 St. John's (TX)|St. John's]] defeated NAQT Texas state champion [[2001 Huntsville|Huntsville]] to win the trip to Malibu. Of the eighteen teams that made the playoffs at the [[2001 HSNCT|HSNCT]] or [[2001 NSC|NSC]], St. John's was the only one who participated in the NAC.

[[2001 Klein|Klein]] knocked [[2001 Parkersburg|Parkersburg]] out of the DC quarterfinals because of a math answer ruled wrong due to the "lowest terms" rule, and went on to win the DC phase and the second Malibu trip.

Both satellite winners were knocked out in the overall semifinals, setting up a final between [[2001 Irmo|Irmo]] and [[2001 Walton|Walton]].

Beall noted that the "bonus round" in the finals was the lowest-scoring bonus round ever read at the NAC, and provided these questions which both teams failed to answer:

:1. Lloyd Douglas, a Lutheran pastor, wrote a novel titled The Big Fisherman. Which apostle is the main character?
:2. Translate this opera titles into English: Die Gotterdammerung.
:3. Provide the missing part: Length, width, depth, ------.
:4. As he was being taken to be beheaded on orders of Henry VIII, Sir Thomas More said, "See me safe up onto the scaffold. For my coming down, let me shift for ..."

Irmo won the final 410-240 over Walton in what Beall labeled "pretty much a virtuoso performance by Jonathan Hess, answering difficult questions in a wide variety of subjects: higher math, government, classical music, current events, geography (his specialty), and even auto mechanics." Hess was put into the [[NAC Hall of Fame]] after the tournament as a junior.

The [[2001 Scripps Ranch|Scripps Ranch]] team was named "Rookie of the Year."

On the tail end of the show's popularity, a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" contest was held at the DC site.
