Marshall spent six years getting a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Chicago, where he was Old Man of UChicago Quizbowl during a period of extended mediocrity between the reigns of Seth the Great and John I Paleologus. Many years before that, he was a member of the Oxford University Quiz Society, in which his proudest achievement was winning the 2004 Intercollegiate Quiz for Balliol College by guessing "Ragtime" on a music lead-in that mentioned a musical genre popular ca. 1910.
