Notes
- $2500 scholarships, rings, and Apple Newton PDAs were given to winning team members, while the second place players got $1500 scholarships and rings, and the third place team received $500 scholarships and rings. Panasonic sponsored the scholarships, Herff Jones the rings, and Apple the PDAs.
- One question from this tournament was "Compute the exact area in square units of a triangle whose base has a unit measure equal to the number of stories in Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" and whose altitude has a unit measure equal to the number of permanent member countries on the United Nations Security Council."
- In a baffling move, New Horizons was selected by the Panasonic committee as the Virginia representative over Thomas Jefferson, who had won the tournament in 1994.
- Lawson Fite became the first (and as of 2008, only) player to be named to the "All-America" team three times.
Survey
Once again, competitors were surveyed on current issues. 61.7% rated President Clinton's overall performance as "good." 55.6% said there should be no change in abortion laws. 54.1% said the Internet was important. 49.5% felt personally threatened by global warming.
