The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team is a student-run organization that competes in collegiate-level quizbowl competitions and hosts several high school and collegiate events throughout the year.

History

The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team was started in the summer of 2006 by transfer students James Johnson and Alex Haber, both of whom arrived at the school that semester after two years at Faulkner State College.

The program started its first "true" season the following fall semester, in which Johnson ran the team as president and Haber helped out as vice-president. Former Faulkner players Jonathan Thompson and Jonathan Byrd also arrived in Tuscaloosa that semester and joined in the effort to build a program. After the school's student organization day, the AAQT had 106 players signed up. To the dismay of those involved only 12 people ever showed up to the practices. Thankfully those 12 players were all very talented and, for the the most part, easy to get along with.

The team attended its first ever tournament that November in Nashville, TN, at Vanderbilt University. At the tournament, ACF Fall 2006, The A team, consisting of James Johnson, Alex Haber, Dan Marion, and Jonathan Thompson, managed to go 9-5 and finish tied for 4th place overall, even though losing Thompson, its top scorer, for the first 3 rounds due to a Jeopardy! try-out. The B team, which included Jonathan Byrd, Leon Gourdouras, Jared Lauridsen (first-timer), and Bobby Bozeman (first-timer), was less successful, going 1-13, but nonetheless happy to have had the experience.
