Edmond Memorial is a public high school in Edmond, Oklahoma whose quizbowl program has been one of the most successful in Oklahoma, claiming several titles in both the OSSAA and NAQT state championships, as well as two ASCN TOC titles.
History
Edmond Memorial's quizbowl team was established in 1988 by head coach Tina Page. They would claim their first state title by winning the 5A Division of the 1993 OSSAA State Championship.
In 1995, under coach Valerie Benton, Memorial defeated Booker T. Washington to win their second OSSAA 5A title, and went on to attend their first ASCN Tournament of Champions, which they won over defending champions James Island. They would repeat both titles in 1996, defeating Thomas Jefferson (VA) in the TOC finals. They would continue to attend every TOC until 2003, achieving a best finish of fourth.
Memorial attended their first good quizbowl tournament by competing in the 1999 HSNCT, at which they placed fourth. In 2001, coach Greg Oppel co-founded the Oklahoma Quiz Bowl Alliance, alongside Eric Bell. In 2002, they won both their first NAQT Oklahoma State Championship and their most recent OSSAA title, becoming the first team to win both titles in the same year. They repeated their NAQT title the following year, and would go on to claim a third in 2009.
Oppel stepped away from coaching following the departure of star player Finn Bender, in 2015, after which leadership was taken over by Jordan Gotcher.
