Furman University is a small, private school catering primarily to undergraduates in greater Greenville, South Carolina.

History

The Furman Academic Competitions Team was founded in fall 1997 by David Bykowski and Darrah Densmore. It may or may not have been continuously active until 2009, when it endured a one-year hiatus, the culmination of an extended inter-team dispute which began with Furman's withdrawal from 2007 ACF Fall after submitting a packet. The team is planning to resume competition in 2010.

Notable tournament results

• Furman for some reason traveled all the way to Wichita State to play in the 1998 Freeze Your Buzz Off II. Darrah Densmore finished sixth in scoring and fourth in the "individual lightning round."
• The DII 1999 NAQT SCT, Southeast, was hosted at Furman and directed by David Bykowski. Furman finished 3-5 in the round robin and missed the playoffs, but earned the host's automatic bid to ICT.
• An Ian Jeffress-led Furman team finished 9th in DII at the 1999 ICT. Jeffress finished fifth in DII "scoring" based on Points Contributed per Game, which measures how good your teammates are at getting bonuses, and second in real scoring to Jeff Hoppes.
• Furman finished ninth, with the same record as Kennesaw State, at the DI 2000 NAQT SCT. Ian Jeffress was fifth in scoring with 45ppg.
• Furman played host to the 2000 PACE NSC. Thanks to a "planned" campus-wide power outage that was made known to students only days before, Saturday's matches were held at Furman, and Sunday matches were held at Pickens High School.
• Furman finished tenth at the DII 2001 NAQT SCT, Southeast, where a Justin Sausville-led University of the South team finished 16-0. Michael Precht (10th) and Tricia Southard (17th) finished in the top 20 in scoring.
• Furman participated in 2002 ACF Nationals, where they apparently competed in a playoff among three 0-8 teams (Texas A&M B and Princeton B being the others) to determine the Division II champion. Furman finished 1-1 and thus took 26th place. Michael Precht paced Furman with 12 ppg, while a Furman player finished last in scoring for the entire tournament. Noted Furman alumnus David Bykowski played for Michigan B in the tournament, but never faced Furman.
• In the DI 2003 NAQT SCT, Midsouth, Furman fielded an all-undergraduate team that went 2-9, finishing ahead of a 1-10 Clemson team. Michael Precht was a bright spot, however, finishing 6th in scoring with 34 ppg.
• Furman went 7-2 to win Division II at the Georgia Tech mirror of 2004 MLK.
• Furman fielded two teams in the DII 2004 NAQT SCT, Southeast. Sam Matson led the sectional in scoring; freshmen Colleen McCormick and William Hendrix began their four-year careers as the Nicest Guys in Furman Quizbowl. In addition to Sam's productivity, Furman A had the third-highest bonus conversion of the tournament at 17.17 ppb. This would normally be expected to result in success, but Furman finished seventh.
• Furman finished 5-8 at the UTC site of the 2004 ACF Regionals. Sam Matson was 9th in scoring with 39ppg.
• Furman fielded an all-undergraduate team, led by sophomores McCormick and Erin Rodgers, that went winless in the DI 2006 NAQT SCT, Southeast.
• Furman went 5-5 at the Georgia mirror of 2008's TIT XXII. Nathan James narrowly won the scoring title.
• Furman went 7-5 at the Vanderbilt mirror of the 2008 ACF Regionals.
