There are four members of the Gioia (JOY-ah) family who have been active in quiz bowl: Ted Gioia, his cousins Thomas Gioia and Mickey Gioia, and Thomas's father (also named Ted).
Ted (the younger)'s father, Dana, is a poet and writer. Thomas's father Ted (the elder) is a jazz historian and winner of the inaugural College Bowl NCT. Dana and the elder Ted are brothers - thus, Thomas and Ted (the younger) are first cousins.
