He was named an All-Star at the [[2018 MSNCT]] (8th grade).  He finished third in the US Academic Bee in 2017, his first nationals appearance.  In 2018,  after [[Robert Muñiz]] won the Academic Bee, Karsten got second and [[Shiva Oswal]] finished 3rd.  He also beat [[Robert Muñiz]] to win the [[National Humanities Bee]], a buzzer competition on literature, mythology, fine arts, and music. Finally, playing solo in the bowl, he got 3rd overall after a 70 point loss to [[Midtown Classical]] in the semifinals.
