Re: Quiz Bowl Upsets

Combining subjects near and dear to my heart,
surprising finishes and thinking Duke quizbowl is the
greatest ever:

Penn Bowl 6 featured Michigan and
Maryland, clearly the class of the tournament, starting in
the same bracket. They both went to the playoffs and
breezed their way to the title game, with Michigan
winning. Michigan lost a grand total of once -- to Duke.
Duke also beat Maryland at the same tournament,
marking perhaps the only time in Penn Bowl history (maybe
even ever) that one team knocked off both eventual
finalists. As the story goes, Maryland gave one of their
extra second-place trophies to Duke as a token of
respect. Of course, Duke made the same playoffs that year,
so maybe it wasn't THAT much of an upset -- just a
statistical quirk.

ever got offended in the chatroom)
