Re: Quiz Bowl Upsets

Illinois's tournament last year was won by
Chicago, who beat a Master's team consisting of John
Sheahan, John Edwards, the non-pareil Andy Wang, and
another Illinois player whose name I have, like a
chucklehead, forgotten (sorry!). What did bith teams have in
common? Well, aside from being excellent teams, both had
been beaten by the University of Kentucky; Chicago
fell on the infamous "woman packet" (I guess it took
two teams to beat them then, too :), and Sheahan et
all on an Illinois packet. The final score in the
latter match was 325 to -5; a tournament staffer later
told me that when he heard the score, he was sure it
was a typo. Indeed, though we had already had the
definition on out team lexicon, this was the paradigmatic
"wangfest".
