Re: Question about IRC chat

Now, this is the point where I really have to speak up. I don't
appreciate being lied about; Matt is fully aware, and has been since
the foundation of the channel, that the Hybnet channel isn't a
private fiefdom; it's never been run as anything other than a
community resource, with David Levinson and myself holding the
administrative keys but the rest of the ops -- including himself --
on equal standing.

In fact, he never even asked to be a founder of the channel. He
never said one word about administrative issues until a few days
ago, at which point he issued an ultimatum that I give up founder
status to someone else, a position he said he would "reluctantly"
accept.

I'd tried to keep this from getting ugly, but as I said, I don't
like lies being told about me.

[technical background: IRC uses a series of "access levels" to
regulate channel functions. Matt, along with Leah Williams, Kelly
Affanatto, and until recently Jason Paik, had access level 20,
meaning they had the power to kick people or ban people from the
channel; this is the mechanism that was used to exclude people from
#packets. David Levinson, Brian Saxton, and I have access level 40,
which means that we can set other people up as ops, or remove them
if necessary. Nobody else has volunteered for either level 20 or
level 40 since late March.]
