TRASH South Regional Announcement again

With some revisions, but with more specifics...

Duke University College Bowl is hosting the 2002 TRASH South Regional
on Saturday, November 9, 2002. This will be a one-day event held at
the Social Sciences building on West Campus. Schedules will depend
on the number of teams participating. High school teams are not
eligible to compete, but the competition is open to all participants
affiliated with a university or otherwise independent.

While we are catering to teams from our area (Virginia, South
Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Bermuda),
certainly teams outside the area are welcome to compete if they find
an incredible airfare down here.

Fees and Discounts

The following schedule is standard for all TRASH Regional tournaments
unless otherwise noted.

The first team from a school $75
Second team from a school $60
Third and subsequent teams $50
Working buzzer system discount $10 off
Game official discount $10 off
Travel discount (more than 100 road miles away from Durham NC) $10 off
Travel discount of minimum entry fee if you fly into RDU (Duke-only
discount)
Costume discount $10 off (must notify TD in advance, all team members
must be in costume)
Minimum fee per team $40

A team consists of a four players actively involved in a game. While
substitutions are permitted, for the sake of allowing as many people
to play, I limit teams to a six-person roster. (I have had a team
try to sneak into a competition with nine players. If you have
financial difficulties but want to bring that many people, please
contact me.) Freelancers and a limited number of solo/duo teams are
also welcome, but entry fees will not be adjusted.

TRASH has also instituted a discount for novice ("virgin") players.
The following definition to be used for registration only at Duke (as
amended from standard TRASH definition): The player must have less
than one year's experience with a college-level popular culture or
TRASH tournament as of November 1, 2002. Qualification for the
discount is at the discretion of the tournament director (me), but
the spirit of the discount is to allow more people to enjoy
themselves playing popular culture questions.

For every virgin on the team, a discount of $5 will be applied to the
entry fee (until you hit the minimum). I do not want to assemble or
verify any proof of virgin status (we do enough of that with mice
here), so I'll have to trust that no one is going to take advantage
of this flexible discount. In registering your team, you must
disclose which players are TRASH virgins.

If a four-person team entered is comprised of only virgin players,
then they will be charged a flat fee of $20, ineligible for any
discounts previously listed, though buzzers and staff would be
encouraged. Teams with smaller rosters comprised of only virgins
will be charged the flat $20 fee as well.

Please note the number of undermanned teams competing is subject to
staffing logistics and the whims of fairness and competition by me.
I'd like to see more than just 16 people playing as individuals.

Rewards and Benefits

The top performing teams from TRASH Regionals will be invited to
attend the 2003 TRASHionals championship tournament, to be held in a
currently undisclosed, secure location sometime in late March or
early April. Even if that is not your goal, there is a benefit to
socializing with and meeting your colleagues. For more information,
contact James Dinan or James Quintong.

News

I would like to encourage as many teams who can to compete here as
possible. So far, I have only gotten a response from ONE team. I do
not expect to cancel the tournament as I do intend to have one team
of Duke players competing, but I do want to encourage all teams in
the area to consider participating.

That being said, there is no Duke football game that day, so parking
should be fine. However, there is the Clemson at UNC football game
on that day, so hotel space is going to be limited. That's why if
you are planning on competing, you should really start planning soon.
