The University of Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announce its tenth annual Maryland High School Invitational Tournament. This year, it will be held on the University of Maryland - College Park campus on Sunday, November 24. Every team is guaranteed to play five games in a swiss-pair format, and the top 16 teams advance to a seeded elimination playoff. The games will be played in a format similar to the "It's Academic" TV show, featured in Maryland and DC high school competitions, with some differences, to wit: the "letter-category" round that "It's Academic" abandoned a few years ago has been retained, and the "visual" round found on the TV show has been replaced by a competitive category round in which all the answers have a common theme (e.g., U.S. Presidents). The rules of the game will be explained in more detail at the tournament, but depart in very few particulars from the "It's Academic" TV show. A few pieces of information that may be useful to you before then: you may have four players playing at any one time (not just three, though you may play short-handed). You can have alternates to be substituted between rounds, though not during games or between teams, if you bring multiple teams. Lastly, the cost is $40 for the first team you send, $35 for each additional team, and a $5 discount per working buzzer system you bring (bring as many as you like). We will provide breakfast before the tournament starts (milk, juice, donuts), and teams will have a 60-90 minute break for lunch. Please let us know by Friday, November 15 if you will be coming, and how many teams and buzzer systems you will bring. Because we use a swiss-pair system for preliminary games (we feel that this is the fairest method), we have a 64-team admissions cap. To register, please email our tournament coordinator, Chris Chrzanowski, at cchrz _at_ wam.umd.edu (cchrz AT wam DOT umd DOT edu). More information will soon be available at our home page: http://www.inform.umd.edu/StudentOrg/maqt Once you have registered, we will provide more information regarding times, location, maps, etc. Last year's Invitational drew 56 teams, and with your patronage, we hope this one will be even more successful.
