TRASH Deep South Regionals

Now that the TRASH regionals are completed, on with the kudos!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Emory Academic Team and TRASH on a well-run Deep South Regional. Steve Bahnaman and the tournament staff were unfailingly cheerful and helpful, for which they deserve great credit. The tournament kept closely to its intended schedule (skilled moderators made this much easier than it might otherwise have been) despite problems with photocopying services and the late arrival of several teams (including two of my own). (aside: When the signs in Atlanta say "Accident: Five Left Lanes Blocked," they apparently mean it. Thank God for a knowledge of alternate routes.)

I was in the rather odd position of playing for one team and "coaching" two novice teams simultaneously. My novice teams did comment that they found some of the tossups uncomfortably long and/or obscure. Perceived obscurity is probably somewhat endemic to the notion of a trash tournament, in which there is arguably no canon at all. I suppose part of that is inexperience, but I thought it might be worth mentioning since the organizers did go out of their way to recruit novice teams. OTOH, a few of the tossups _did_ seem unnecessarily long, especially in one of the early rounds (I think it was rd. 2). [I should note that I didn't feel particularly frustrated personally, but I was playing on a team with Charlie Steinhice and Keith Hudson, so naturally I didn't get to hear how long most questions were. :-)]

Thanks again to the staff and TRASH for a job well done.

Stephen Taylor
