Announcement: FRANKLIN INVITATIONAL, 29 March 2003

The University of Pennsylvania Academic Team, which has hosted Penn
Bowl, the nation's largest collegiate invitational, since 1991, is
proud to announce its first high school tournament, the FRANKLIN
INVITATIONAL.

The Franklin will be a one-day tournament held on the campus of the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on
SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2003.

The tournament will use a round-robin format to guarantee each team a
minimum of six games. The top teams will be eligible for both the
NAQT HS Championship Tournament (http://www.naqt.com) and the PACE
National Scholastics Championship (http://www.pace-nsc.org). Prizes
will be given to the top teams and individuals.

At the present time, the field is limited to 32 teams, with a limit
of two teams per school. We are willing, however, to expand the
field, provided we have enough buzzers and moderators to do so.

Entrance fees shall be as follows:

* $75 per team
* -$10 per buzzer (limit 3 *per team*)
* -$15 per moderator (no limit)
* -$20 per team for teams driving over 500 miles, as determined by
Yahoo! Maps (Penn's ZIP code is 19104), or teams flying into
Philadelphia
* $40 minimum per team

You may register by sending an e-mail to <pennbowl_at_...> or by
filling out the registration form at
http://pennbowl.tripod.com/franklin/franklin.html .

While we have not arranged hotel rooms, there are numerous hotels in
the area; if enough teams indicate that they plan to stay overnight
Friday or Saturday, we will try to book rooms at one of the hotels
within walking distance of campus.

Matches will be untimed, 10-tossup halves, using NAQT Invitational
Series #34 (please see "Note about NAQT questions" below). The
tournament is an unofficial NAQT event; while most NAQT rules will be
in effect, there will be a couple of minor variations.

For teams planning to fly, US Airways will probably have the cheapest
fares among major carriers; it is also served by discount carriers
America West and AirTran.

For teams taking the train, Amtrak is currently having a 2-for-1
sale, provided you do not depart during peak periods (Friday and
Sunday 11 AM-11 PM), and you purchase your tickets no later than
February 15.

The Penn Academic Team has hosted nearly 1,000 teams at over twenty
collegiate tournaments. We look forward to our first high school
tournament, and hope you will join us for it. If you have any
questions, please feel to contact us at <pennbowl_at_...>.

Nick Walters and Samer Ismail
Captain and Advisor, Penn Quiz Bowl

P.S. Samer will be at BHSAT12 this weekend; interested teams may fill
out registration forms there.

Note about NAQT questions:

NAQT sets are used at multiple tournaments across the country. The
following events will be using the same series as the Franklin
Invitational; therefore, your players may not attend the Franklin
Invitational if they are attending any of the following events, or
vice versa:

* USC/Riverside HS Invitational (CA)
* Texas A&M HS Invitational
* Quizarama, Irmo HS (SC)
* 2003 NAQT Delaware State Championship (Charter School, Wilmington,
DE)
* Univ. of Rochester Flower City Invitational (NY)
* Conserve School Quiz Bowl Varsity Tournament (WI)
