Howdy, all-- Valencia Community College hosted a two-year college NAQT Sectional on Saturday, February 1. Eighteen teams from Florida competed, though none from north of Ocala. We ran two brackets of nine teams each for an initial round robin, then had each of the top three teams from one bracket play the top three from the other. This system was repeated for the 4-6 and 7-9 teams, so each team played 11 matches. In what amounted to a championship match, Valencia's Red team beat Valencia's Black team 295-280. The teams were tied going into the final question, which was interrupted unsuccessfully by the Black team. Thus, Red was undefeated, and Black had one loss. Broward Community College's A team took third by virtue of highest total points among a group of three teams all with 8-3 records; the others were Central Florida CC and Broward B. Black) 39.38 Sean Conover (Seminole CC) 37.50 Just FYI, through eight rounds Baker had 19 powers, 64 other toss-ups and only 5 negs; he's ready to be an elite undergraduate player somewhere else if he can ever finish his math credits and transfer.
