Sword Bowl 2003: full results, stats, gratitude, etc.

Sword Bowl 2003, a "junior bird" academic tournament, was held at UTC
on Sat., Jan. 25. Congratulations again to the winners of a very
competitive tournament, ultimately decided by a mere 5 points:

1st -- Emory A
2nd -- Georgia Tech
3rd -- Emory B
4th -- MTSU
Consolation:
1st -- South Carolina
2nd -- UTC A
3rd -- Macon State

Before we get to the results...

GRATITUDE
As always, UTC's official stats goddess Dorothy Morisch worked her
magic, with help from Yolanda Fernandez. We were fortunate enough to
have a full complement and then some of experienced house readers.
Thanks go to assistant TD Stephen Taylor and fellow officials Tom
Michael, Dave and September Leach, Alysia Vrailas, Toby Walter, Gail
Celio, James Quintong, Keith Hudson, Mark Dawson, James Washick,
Jennifer Fremlin and Glenn Allen Bobo. Thanks also go to buzzer
setup crewchief Wally Edmondson, who also provided some fine visual
boni.

Speaking of questions, major thanks go to Samer Ismail for being so
much help in a question sharing arrangement with Penn Bowl. Thanks
also to freelance authors from Iowa State and DePauw, as well as Tom
Deaton and Dan Finley for making rounds from Tom's juco tournament in
Tallahassee available as backups.

SIDE NOTES

We were pleased to note that every player in the field correctly
answered at least one tossup, and that only 4 tossups in the
tournament went unanswered in all rooms. 4 players earned bragging
rights as the only player in the field to get a particular tossup:
Amber Graham, Macon State (Santana's album "Shaman")
Christopher Manker, Kentucky (Edward Everett)
Stephen Webb, Georgia Tech (Poltava)
Matt Parriott, MTSU (the Great Trek)

Playing in his first tournament, Parriott of MTSU was also among
those recognized for the best speed buzzes, along with Matt Keller of
Vandy A, Nadya Boyka of Florida B, Eugene Buchko of Georgia Tech, and
Adam Pinson of Bevill State A.

Parriott and Keller also became part of UTC quizbowl history as the
same gloriously wrong answer was given in *five* of the eight rooms.
We didn't record the name of one of the answerers, but besides the
two Matts, Jarrett Edwards of South Carolina and Nathan Coulombe of
Kentucky buzzed in with "Bela Lugosi" instead of "Bela Karolyi."
Other gloriously wrong answers recorded by our crew:

Wrong: Johnny Appleseed. Right: Kokopelli. (Shae Williams, GA Tech)
Wrong: Pele. Right: Akihito. (Dennis Thibodeaux,
MTSU.
We asked, & it was Pele the soccer player, not Pele the volcano god.)
Wrong: Aristotle. Right: A. Pushkin. (Will Kirkland, KY)
Wrong: Iron Curtain. Right: Veil of Ignorance. (Nate Rice,
KY)
Wrong: Astroglide. Right: Joe Millionaire. (Shannon Moore,
UTC, buzzing in on the name of the production company. Shannon thus
becomes the second UTC player to record a gloriously wrong answer
involving Astroglide.)

TEAM RESULTS, PT. 1: ROUND ROBIN

The field was divided into two brackets for a round robin; the top 4
teams from each bracket then advanced to playoffs, while the
remaining teams continued in a consolation bracket. Here are team
results after the round robin. Note that totals won't balance.
(Last-minute schedule changes forced an unbalanced schedule and
removed all byes; teams that submitted packets got credit for a win,
as did teams scheduled to play them when their packet was used.)
