Re: NAQT Heartland (?) sectionals (at MU-Columbia)

"I don't want to start another flame war, but exactly how much
competence is required of an SCT host?"

The tournament was very evenly matched, and I think we all had much
fun. However, one must keep in mind that this was indeed an NAQT
Sectional. Therefore, aside from nationals, it is THE most important
tournament of the year, as one must perform well enough to qualify
for the ICT (more important than ACF Regionals, as only attendance is
necessary to go to Nationals; more important than CBI Regionals
because they only care about a winner and no "S-values" are processed
to determine wild-cards). Thus, this tournament must go to all
lengths to be run smoothly and reported accurately. This includes at
least team, if not individual, statistics updated regularly
throughout the tournament. I think that a very high level of
competence is required of the host of the most important non-national
tournament of the season.

Though I think it is a very noble concept to expand the quizbowl
landscape, there are questions in granting a sectional to a school
which had never run a college tournament before, not to mention one
in which 21 teams would attend and very detailed stats would have to
be reported. Noting that there were no updates on simple win-loss
records through the tournament, it was technically hearsay at the end
that we indeed won first outright and that the Div. II teams had to
playoff, and that Ark. B and ISU B were indeed the only two teams
tied.

Truth be told, I was dismayed by the lack of updates and complete
uncertainty in the tournament standings, and I definitely don't think
it was worth $120 per team, but I think that Missouri did a very good
job considering the amount of previous experience they had in running
tournaments. The rounds progressed swiftly, and even though we
started over thirty minutes late (due to no-shows, etc.), we still
finished by the time pinpointed on the schedule. Some tournament has
to be your first, and I am sure that Missouri will learn and improve
from this experience.

The last thing I would want to do is to establish a Catch-22
situation with running big-time tournaments because I would be
hurting lots of programs, including my own.
