VHSL Scholastic Bowl State Championship results

On a rainy 22nd February, 2003, the 6th annual VHSL Scholastic Bowl
state championships were held at the College of William & Mary in
Williamsburg, Virginia.

A thank you goes out to Adam Fine, Samer Ismail and Christopher
Moretti for serving as group coordinators, and again to Adam for e-
mailing me the results I wrote down and left in his car :-)

The winners were Maggie Walker in AAA, Salem in AA and George Mason
in A. In terms of parity, competition and surprises, this was one of
the best.

Notables:

* Radford's coach had two 8th graders who would have been on the
starting four, but which their coach mistakenly thought were
ineligible (apparently you're allowed 5 years for academic type
events.) Eastern Montgomery managed to beat them out for the Region C
title (Group A, near Southwest Virginia). The growth of quizbowl in
Region C is encouraging.

* Marion from Region IV (Group AA, far Southwest Virginia) had its
best performance ever.

* The Northwestern Region (Group AAA, everything outside of Northern
Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads) tournament was held on FRIDAY
THE 21ST due to weather. EC Glass's (Lynchburg) team apparently
travelled from Lynchburg to Manassas to Lynchburg to Williamsburg in
the span of 24 hours. Fortunately Glass arrived just as the opening
ceremony was starting, preventing me from invoking the Rule of the
Four Teddy Bears (namely, matches start after 10 minutes of delay,
and are played as if the absent team is sitting right there like Four
Teddy Bears

* This was Marion Suter's final year as coach of Spotswood's academic
team; she retires after this year. The southern Shenandoah Valley is
perhaps one of the most competitive and talented quizbowl areas in
the country located outside a major metropolitan area. Spotswood High
School has won 96 consecutive regular season matches in the Valley
District.
* Region II (Group AA, northwestern Virginia) crowned Loudoun County
as its champion. However, Loudoun County had to forfeit its title as
it had used a player who had not passed five courses and was
therefore ineligible under VHSL rules.
