<< No kidding about the choice of questions. I remember being knocked out finally my senior year after coming back from like 200 down (I played for Sterling Heights Stevenson, class of 97) on a question that started reading the first paragraph of The Red Badge of Courage and then asked how many *&*&)( nouns were in the passage. >> That -5 for every missed tossup (be it an interrupt or not) can be a real .... touchy issue. I recall hearing about Grand Ledge (my HS team, way back when) beating Lapeer West in an elimination-bracket game because someone from West accidentally hit her buzzer on the last question w/time running out. This was back when Grand Ledge had a string of five consecutive appearances at the State Tournament (1989-93). An appearance this year would break a six-year drought for GL. And in order to make this year's tournament (I'm assuming they finished behind Jackson in the Capital Area Conference round-robin and tournament) they'll have to find a way to finish ahead of what I see as the two other top teams in the Tri-County Academic League, Lansing Catholic Central (who seemed to play uptight in the 99 Port Huron tourney) and Okemos, coached by former DCC player Matt Morrison. Seeing as how Okemos got thumped pretty soundly by East Lansing in the first round of the Quizbusters tournament, and seeing as how Grand Ledge is markedly improved this year (to make a four-team first-division in the CAC along w/East Lansing, Holt and Jackson), I would make a preliminary guess that, barring an unforseen quantum leap in the level of play of Lakewood, Eaton Rapids, Mason, Charlotte, Dewitt, and Portland, it looks to be GL and LCC battling it out for TCL supremacy, with Okemos playing the role of darkhorse spoiler. In fact, this season Grand Ledge won for the first time on Quizbusters since I was a student way back in 90-91. Nine years coming--I presume that was the longest dry spell that any school's team has had on the show. mak
