Preliminary Science Monstrosity announcement

This summer, probably on the last weekend of July, UC Berkeley Quiz
Bowl will most likely be holding another installment of its fabulous
BASQUE series of tournaments, hopefully combining Chicago Open,
Capitol Punishment, a Subash singles tournament, and Science
Monstrosity (formerly known as Science Masters). This is a
preliminary announcement for Science Monstrosity.

Science Monstrosity (hereafter SM) will be a science-only
tournament. Teams will consist of a maximum of two players and the
entry fee will be $10/player. The tournament will be packet
submission, with everyone who wants to play being required to submit
a packet unless arrangments to the contrary are made with me. I will
be the head editor and the physics editor for SM; if you are
interested in editing some particular discipline (bio, chem, earth
science, etc.) please let me know. I can always use help editing.

Packet guidelines:
Every team of two will be required to submit 20/20 as follows:
4/4 Physics
4/4 Biology
4/4 Chemistry
3/3 Math/Computer Science and Engineering
3/3 Earth Science/Astronomy
2/2 Your choice

Notes:
1) Your choice may be biography. There may be no more than 1/1
biography in your packet.
2) Try to distribute things evenly across disciplines. That is,
don't write 4/4 worth of solid state physics questions or 3/3 "name
the constellation" questions.
3) Astrophysics belongs in physics, not astronomy. Biochemistry is
chemistry, not biology.

Difficulty: PLEASE READ THIS PART
Obviously, these questions are going to be harder on the average
than science questions you encounter in most tournaments. There's no
getting around this, but I don't want this tournament to be too
hard. If possible, the question should be written in such a way that
someone who has finished the standard lower division classes in the
subject should be able to get the question on the giveaway, or at
least recognize the answer. In all cases, questions should be on
things that people would normally be expected to cover in a standard
undergraduate curriculum in the subject. Please note the use of the
word "standard." Different people cover different things, so before
you write a very difficult question and justify it by saying you
covered this material, think about whether it's standard.

The preliminary due date for these questions will July 13. Again, if
you would like to edit some particular section please let me know.
Also, if you want to play but don't want to write, you will have to
get my approval first.

That's all,
Jerry
