DUCKS Camp 2003

Greetings!

The DePauw University Competitive Knowledge Squad (DUCKS) will host
its third annual Summer Quiz Bowl Camp from July 19-26 at its campus
in Greencastle, Indiana.

The camp, begun two years ago to help high school students by
exposing them to the college quiz bowl game for a week, began with
24 students in July of 2001. Last year we had 45 students attend,
and we hope to have about that same number this year.

The camp will give high school players an in depth look at many
subjects covered in quiz bowl, and attempt to make high school teams
better by exposing players to how the game is played at the college
level. We have found that this strategy has helped people who
attended the camp in previous years, as they have been captains of
regional, sectional and even state-winning teams, and have been
nominated to all-state teams by Panasonic through their annual
nationwide competitions. Players have said that not only was the
DUCKS camp a fun week, but it made them better prepared than many of
their opponents who did not attend.

The camp is specifically designed to be a good time and give lots of
competitive experience. Players will play in no fewer than 5 day-
long tournaments over the course of the week and will have free time
to interact with their fellow players from different Midwestern
states. Also, the camp staff, all of whom have played quiz bowl at
the college level, will take time to conduct specialized information
sessions on many common subjects in quiz bowl. Subjects will range
from literature to biology to subjects that do not get enough notice
like economics and philosophy. Many players who attended in years
past have kept in touch via the Internet and vowed to come back this
year and renew the friendships they made.

Cost of the camp is $225 per student for the entire week. This
includes room, all meals, a camp tee shirt and many printed lists of
material that will benefit the players' school when brought back
from camp. This cost may be taken on by either the school or the
parent of the individual player. There is a $5 discount for each
student of a school that can provide a working buzzer system for our
use during the week. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure an
air-conditioned dorm, so students are encouraged to bring as many
fans as they like, and students with severe allergies or asthma
might re-consider attending camp. Our apologies, but there was no
way we could avoid this situation.

Information can be found on our website,
www.depauw.edu/student/orgs/ducks/index.htm . To request more
information or registration forms, e-mail to quizbowlcamp (at) yahoo
(dot) com . Schools are not limited in the number of players they
can send to camp, but spots fill fast, on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Students who just graduated may also apply, but priority will
be given to those still enrolled in high school. This camp is
suited for players of all skill levels and will benefit everyone who
attends. We hope to hear from you soon!
