Re: [quizbowl] Reinventing the wheel

Getting around to checking my mail. This may be
beyond anyone's interest, but eh, I'm bored.

I don't think so. I think each tournament varies
depending on what works best for the directors and
hopefully players comments too. I think varying
formats can help keep the games interesting, as long
as the rules are clear beforehand.

True. But given that each tournament is different in
its details, some of these questions may make more
sense. Perhaps the key is not to assume that any
given tournament necessarily represents QB as a whole,
but simply allows pointers of what aspects work well
(together or individually) and which don't?

It allows for more degrees of clues. A difficult
followed by a giveaway is perhaps not the best way to
differentiate between players. Of course, a question
should be measured by the clues in order, and cut most
of the awkward wording and unhelpful bits.

For most tournaments it allows more people to have fun
and feel important, assuming most teams are well
rounded. Also, I think well rounded knowledge is an
enobling goal. I know I get bored every time math
comes up, so if a tournament was almost all math and
science, I'd be unhappy. Others would love it though.
Undistributed tournaments are fine occassionally, but
aren't the most accessible or best judges of QB
skills.

Well for me, it feels more worthwhile when it does.
But other ones are fine, in my opinion.

Well, be prepared to take the heat if you don't. And
presumably there's a team to help with the editing.
Just make sure you can make the tournament run and
that people enjoy it (question quality is a part).

Criticisms hopefully help make future tournaments
better. Using specifics helps the case, but ideas can
be more general too.

PS Oh, and regarding qbtunagirl's "I guess it's not as
bad as a certain circuit member who flooded every one
of his packets with questions on a certain terrible
Swedish band"...you'd better not be bashing ABBA.
