Chicago Open - Team and Singles Results

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay in this. Both tournaments took more out of me
than I'd anticipated and I could not bring myself to look at qb stuff
for a week. The team and individual stats will be posted Monday or
Tuesday, as the round robin stats are on a friend's computer and he
has only just returned from a trip. I have the playoff stuff done,
if anyone wants that before Monday. Chris Borglum correctly reported
the top finishers, which I'll just repeat here. Popes of Chilitown
(Chris Borglum, Kelly McKenzie, Raj Dhuwalia, and Seth Kendall)
finished first at 12-1 with their only loss coming to A Ball of Malt
and Madame Butterfly (Susan Ferrari, Matt Reece, and Ed Cohn). MGD
(Paul Litvak, Ezequiel Berdichevsky, Andrew Yaphe, and Ben Heller)
finished second with a record of 10-3 (they had two losses to the 1st
place team and one to the aforementioned Suan, Matt, Ed team). The
next two spots were filled by Sometimes a Great Notion (Eric
Hillemann, R. Hentzel, and Tom Waters) and A Ball of Malt and Madame
Butterfly. I'll have the exact order for these teams, the remaining
ones, and all the stats in three or four days.

Congratulations to Chris, Kelly, Raj, and Seth for emerging at the
top of such a powerful field and thanks to all the other teams who
attended.

Before I get to the singles results, I should also thank several
people: Seth Teitler and Paul Lujan, who wrote the majority of the
science for both tournaments and did a great job at that; Alice,
Chris, Ben, and Philo for moderating during the team tournament; and
Alice, Susan, and Mica for moderating during the singles tournament.
Also thanks to Dan Greenstein and Matt Levine for running all or part
of the East and West Coast mirrors.

As for the singles, the 23 participants played rounds of 40, 50, and
40 questions to determine seeding rounds for the double elim, which
occurred in an upper bracket of 16 and a lower bracket of 7. The
final results appear below with wins and losses in brackets (losses
are in all caps) and inital seeding in parentheses.

Congratulations to Kelly McKenzie for winning this event for what I
believe is the third year in a row (especially after emerging
undefeated in a tough upper half of the winner's bracket that
included Zeke, R., and Andrew). That's quite an accomplishment. I
believe Kelly took a nice bound edition of some Jane Austen novels
(always a fine choice), Eric Hillemann got a book with some naked
women on the cover, and Josh Hill got an It's Academic quiz book
generously donated by Andrew Yaphe.
