The following is a reannouncement and call for interest for The Illinois Open 2003: Transfigured Spite, which will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on November 15, 2003. There have been a few changes, the chief of which is that I am now in charge of this tournament. Anyone interested in attending this fine event should e-mail me at msorice(at)uiuc.edu at their earliest convenience. Illinois Open 2003 will be an ACF-style, packet-submission tournament with an expected difficulty approximately equal to or slightly less than that of Kelly MacKenzie's Wildcat Invitational Tournament (i.e. somewhere close to ACF Regionals.) Packets are required of all participating teams except those consisting _entirely_ of first-year and second-year players, as determined by me. Anyone wishing to claim this exemption must do so by e- mailing me at msorice(at)uiuc.edu on or before October 25th, but please register as soon as possible; it is not necessary to claim your exemption when you register. The distribution and packet guidelines are as follows: (#TU/#Bonuses Category) 5/5 Literature 5/5 Science 5/5 History 3/3 Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy 3/3 Fine Arts 2/2 Social Science 1/1 Geography 1/1 Your Choice (trash, anything above, or anything else. I.e. your choice) Beyond that, please follow these two simple guidelines: (I) Please write questions with unambiguous, well-defined answers and without "filler," i.e. sequences of information that do not define a single answer or set of equivalent, explicitly acceptable answers. (II) Please vary your questions over subdiscipline, time period, and region where applicable. It is my fondest hope that guidelines more specific than these are not required, but if you find these requirements too vague to operate upon or do not understand them, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at msorice(at)uiuc.edu. I reserve the right to reject as unacceptable any and all packets that I feel blatantly disregard these guidelines. Exact pricing will be posted very shortly (expect it within a week.) The packet submission discounts and their associated dates, however, remain unchanged and are as follows: (Acceptable packet submitted by: discount) Sept 27: $30 October 4: $20 October 11: $10 October 18: $5 October 25: 0* November 1: -$10+ Nov. 5: -$20 After Nov. 5: -$50, assuming I decide to let you play, which is highly unlikely unless you've e-mailed me by November 5 to let me know that I should expect your packet late. Please note that: *any team eligable for the afforementioned "first-year and second-year" exemption will recieve no discount if it claims its exemption and does not submit a packet but may, at any date before November 1, waive its exemption and submit a packet for a discount as outlined above, but without penalties; +a negative discount means that I take more of your money, whereas a positive discount means that you keep more of your money. There has been a degree of difficulty obtaining interest in this tournament and members of UIUC ABT have suggested that this is because the proposed difficulty is too high. Therefore, in short, if you are interested in this tournament as is, please e-mail me at msorice(at)uiuc.edu as soon as possible. If, however, you would be interested in an easier event on the same date or if you have any questions about this tournament whatsoever, also please e-mail me at msorice(at)uiuc.edu. Michael Angelo Sorice, msorice(at)uiuc.edu Tournament Director/Chief Packet Editor, IO 2003
