HS: Duke High School Celebrity Shoot announcement

THIRD (FINAL?) ANNOUNCEMENT

[This announcement is intended for pre-registered teams as well.]

The Duke College Bowl team announces it will host the 2003 Duke High
School Celebrity Shoot Biography Tournament on Saturday, November 1,
2003, for interested high school academic teams. While the emphasis
for our field falls within the state of North Carolina, any
interested academic team within the region may apply to compete. The
only teams ineligible to compete are those attending the Case High
School Celebrity Shoot tournament the weekend before in Cleveland,
Ohio.

Format:

This format is similar to the NC Public Libraries Quiz Bowl
competition in that no buzzers will be used. Specifically, here is
the general format:

1) All questions will pertain to biographical information about
an individual in an academic or non-academic field.

2) All answers will be written and submitted. No buzzers are
needed.

3) The team competition consists of three events in which all
students compete against the same set of questions. No match play.

a. Individual preliminary test (all four team members
individually take a written test)

b. Foursomes team round (all four team members can consult when
answering questions)

c. Category relay (one of the four team members [at a time]
answer a series of questions related by category)

4) An individual championship will be determined by taking the
students who scored within the top 64 in the preliminary test and
placing them in one-on-one non-buzzer single-elimination matches.

Announced awards

Top 4 teams get a trophy.

Top 4 individuals overall get a medal.

Top 4 freshmen/sophomore scorers on the preliminary test get a trophy.

If there are 2 or more teams consisting of students from different
schools set up by the Tournament Organizers on the day of
competition, the best chimeric team will get a trophy for each of its
members.

Additional awards may be awarded at the discretion of the Tournament
Staff as warranted.

Entry fee structure

$35 for the first team of exactly four students, $5 for each
additional student (alternate). $20 for new schools to register their
first team after October 21 [anyone who registered one team prior to
October 21 can add additional teams with no surcharge]. Checks may
be submitted at on-site registration. Checks should be made payable
to Duke College Bowl.

Pre-registration

All teams that pre-registered should submit the names of their
students and grade levels (9-12) by October 28. At on-site
registration we will confirm your rosters and assignments. We prefer
that you separate your students into four-person groups and clearly
state which students are your intended alternates. All rosters
submitted will NOT be considered final or fixed until after on-site
registration is complete. Please note: all "alternates" will be
competing.

For the computer savvy, if you submit your rosters, I would prefer
submitting them as a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel or as a three-
column table in Microsoft Word: Name, Team, and Grade, being the
headers. The following information is needed in separate columns.
For "Team" please just use your school's name unless you are
submitting more than one team (in which case list [School name] A or
B, etc.

Any coaches that wish to compete should also list themselves on this
roster, with your "Grade" being "13." Coaches are NOT charged for
competing, but obviously they are ineligible for any of the announced
awards.

Location and schedule

Teams competing at the 2003 Duke HSCS should convene at White Lecture
Hall Auditorium (Room 107) by 8:45 am. White Lecture Hall is located
on Duke's East Campus next to East Duke Building. This is the same
building we used for Duke Academic Festival last semester. We expect
that we should be complete with the entire tournament by 6:00 pm.
Directions to East Campus can be found at
http://www.oit.duke.edu/CMSsub/maps/maps.html .

At this point we do not expect to be providing lunch, but we are two
blocks away from Ninth Street, which has a lot of places to eat.
