Re: COTKU/Big Lots comments

If I'm not mistaken, not only were there no postdocs at COTKU
(are postdocs even eligible to play?), but many of the usual top grad
students were missing. I don't think any of last year's top 4 scorers
were present (Kelly McKenzie, Vernon Davenport, myself, & Freeburg),
though Kevin Comer and Wes Matthews were there this time. Robert
Trent is another grad student who is usually among the top scorers at
COTKU, but I don't know if he (or Vandy) was there.

And if Jeff Zahnen was there with the UF team, he might have been
the senior-most player (assuming Trent was not there). But I don't
know when Zahnen and Kendall started playing at the college level, so
I don't know which one wins as Most Antiquated.

And as one more added note, it's been said before, but I'll
repeat it -- being in grad school is generally NOT an advantage for a
quizbowler. It's only an advantage in the sense that one may have
been playing for many years by the time they reach grad school. But,
if I may overgeneralize, material studied by grad students has limited
overlap with the "quizbowl canon." Nor, in general, does one have as
much spare time as a grad student to read over plot summaries or
glossaries of geology terms. I don't think being a postdoc would be
much of an advantage either, for the same reasons. Nor is being 30 --
my memory is as sharp as Nerf these days.

I've forgotten what question I was responding to, so I guess
that'll be all.
