Re: Article about gender disparity in academic competition, with Bonus Flame!!

I've had a similar experience to Lee. When I was in high school, we
always had 5-6 girls at any practice. At DePauw, I can think of at
least 10 women in 4-5 years of existence who have come to practice
and gone to tournaments on a regular basis. I don't know what it
is, but I have an inkling. It's kind of a snowball effect, I
assume. Once it's clear to women that it's OK to be attending
practice and the men aren't all going to try to jump you, they exude
that comfortability to other women. This, in turn, creates a
culture where women are more apt to come to practice and, in the
case of several women on both teams I've played on, get better, be
more aggressive and contribute more. It also helps lead them into
leadership roles. The presidency of DUCKS has been filled by two
women, in fact.
