Re: [quizbowl] Re: Article about gender disparity in academic competition, with Bonus Flame!!

It is certainly interesting the amount of female input into this discussion. Why would you men have any idea why girls don't play with you? I have played quiz bowl since the fourth grade and always experienced balanced teams, as most of you have found the case to be precollegiate. Also, here at the University of Oklahoma we have a mostly balanced team, and four of our five officers are girls. What's the secret to our success? What makes girl want to not join other teams that are predominantly male? Is it because we are to timid? Is it because society has conditioned us to believe it is not our place? Is it because boys are innately better? Perhaps partially, but there is a much more straight forward answer that requires little psychology or speculation.

A large percent of the circuit is disgusting. So many of you men, often at least one per team, and definitely in a team you will compete against is just slovenly. Shower! Comb your hair! Wash your face! If you do maintain the standards of hygiene try not to just ogle girls who wander into your practices. So many men on the circuit are so amazed to see a curved body off of the television screen that they have no idea how to behave in a social manner. And if there's the one guy on your team that gets his kicks mocking the other gender, shut him up.

How do you get and retain girls? Treat them normally and interact with them like they are just regular people. If you act like it's such a big deal to have a girl there she will quit showing up. And try to keep that Wacko that's attempting to scare them off shut up.

I, personally, have found a clean, respectful, and socially functional boyfriend on my academic team, and continue to enjoy playing the game.
