Re: Article about gender disparity in academic competition, with Bonus Flame!!

(materializing from nowhere as usual)

"A large percent of the circuit is disgusting. "

This is just not true. In four years of college quizbowl I can truly
only think of one person that really really needed a shower. He
wasn't even in my region and had peaked somewhere before my time. Yes
there are few bad apples here and there as in life itself, but this
is a long-lasting stereotype and it isn't fair to the 96% of guys
*and girls* that are clean and at least passably social. Now we may
not all shop at Ambercrombie and American Eagle but if that is the
requirement for people to hang out with go somewhere else! Please!
Just because *some* of the male quizbowl players are shy or not used
to being around girls doesn't make them bad people to hang out with.
My male teammates were some of my best friends, hell I'm marrying one
of them.

I think a big reason why you don't see many women is that women are
less likely to pursue the single-minded addiction to studying and
writing questions it takes to be good at AC these days. Women in
general tend to multi task more and have broader interests. They
don't (mostly) get scared away by the men, but by obscurity and
futility.
