NAQT Southwest SCT Results

Twenty-three teams in total gathered here in sunny Fayetteville,
Arkansas, to compete in the 2004 NAQT Southwest Sectional
Championship Tournament. Division I (eight teams, five undergrad
teams) played a double round robin, and Division II (fifteen teams)
played a single round robin.

In Division I, Texas A&M Grad swept the competition, 14-0, to win the
Division I title. Rice finished 10-4 to grab second place in Division
I, as well as the Division I Undergraduate title. Top scorers in
Division I were: Caleb Lo from Texas A (56.8 points/20 tossup heard);
Adam Escandell from Texas B (46.6); Candace Benefiel from Texas A&M
Grad (45.6); and Scott Smith from A&M Undergrad (42.8).

In Division II, Kansas and Wichita State both finished the round
robin at 12-2. A one-game final was played, with Kansas winning, 215-
180, to capture the Division II crown. Top scorers in Division II
were: Jeremy Vaughn from Wichita State (46.6); Angelo Malabanan from
Tulsa (41.8); Grant Volle from Tulsa; (40.4); and Colin Brown from
Oklahoma State A (39.0).

Four schools (Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana State, Oklahoma State,
and Southwest Missouri State) competed at NAQT Sectionals for the
first time today. A special award was given to the top new school,
which was won by Louisiana State A (11-3 record in Division II).

Congratulations to all teams that won berths to the ICT this year,
and good luck to strong finishing schools in receiving wild-card
berths. Hopefully the Southwest will send a large contingent to St.
Louis this year.

My abundant gratitude to guest staffers Dave Murphy, Stephen Gill,
Frank Thomas, Chad Kubicek, Bradi Roberts, and Wes Wehrman, as well
as alumnus Neil Jones and current members and associates of Arkansas
Quiz Bowl, for moderating and scorekeeping during this eventful and
enjoyable day. A special thanks to Chris Romero, who, among other
things, kept stats on his laptop due to a building network
malfunction; managed logistics between rounds, keeping the tourney
pace smooth; and assisted on protest resolutions. I only had to call
NAQT once throughout the day. :-)

Most importantly, I would like to thank all of the teams that
participated today, especially the new teams, and I wish all of you
the best of luck in the future. I hope you all had as much fun
playing as I did hosting!

Sincerely,

Joshua Hill
