In defense of Coddling?

At points throughout the debate over NAQT's eligibility extension for
UCLA, the point of why D2 exists was raised multiple times.

I'm a freshman in college who fully prided himself on his NAC
hsquizbowl skills. Naturally I later learned that NAC was an inferior
format, but that is besides the point. I loved playing quiz bowl.

When I got to college I went to my first practice and couldn't answer
a single question. I was way out of my league. It was frustrating to
the point of considering giving up playing quiz bowl for good, until I
attended my first tournament, Puppy Chow. After finally being able to
answer questions, my self-confidence was restored.

So having some sort of JV mechanism at college quiz bowl is good, if
for nothing else then to protect young minds from being destroyed by
the forces that are grad students. I understand the grumbling about
coddling first time college level players at a national level, but
teams only develop through experience, and playing teams from across
the country is always fun. Perhaps there should be only one National
field, with teams being able to qualify a 'Div 2' squad through a div
2 field at SCT. Think of it as the weaker conferences getting bids to
the big dance in NCAA basketball.

My 2, or 3 (perhaps 4) bits on the situation. It's entirely personal,
based on that the fact that I found a slightly restricted field
conducive to making quiz bowl worth playing as a freshman. So, please
don't rip to shreds now!
