The UTC Academic Trivia Association will host its fifth annual RC Cola
Classic, a one-day trash tournament, on Sun., April 25, 2004. That's
the day after the Moon Pie Classic (also at UTC; if you don't have the
earlier message and want details on the Moon Pie, let me know.)

TIME & PLACE: To help those with long drives home, we'll start
earlier on Sun. 4/25: registration at 8:30 AM, announcements at 8:55,
and play beginning at 9 AM. When will we finish? Depends on how many
teams we have, but based on past experience, we hope to be at least
into the playoffs by 5 PM. Tournament headquarters will be in room
201 (Card Family Auditorium) in the new Engineering, Mathematics, and
Computer Science Building on the UTC campus.

ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to all sentient beings regardless
of school status, opposable thumb, etc. Teams do not have to have any
academic affiliation. If you want to play, and you tell me in time,
and you submit a packet or make arrangements otherwise, you're in. If
you want to make yourself available as a free agent to join a team --
or if you have a partial team in need of free agent help -- let me
know and I'll pass the word.

FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Packet submission is
required unless arranged in advance (see guidelines and timetables
below.) Teams will be four players each, with alternates OK as long as
there are no substitutions in mid-match. Depending on the number of
teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round robin. This
of course means I need to know the number of teams in advance.

FEES:
Base fee $80 per team; assumes full packet (25 and 25, see below for
specs) is submitted by midnight Mon., April 5, 2004.
Minimum fee after discounts: $40 per team.
Discounts:
 - $5 for a working buzzer (additional - $5 for a second buzzer if it
turns out we need it)
 - $10 for an experienced reader for the RC Cola Classic itself
 - $10 for full-time official status at the Moon Pie Classic (Sat.
4/24/04)
 - $10 for full-time official status at the Dennis Haskins Open (Sat.
3/20/04)
 - $10 for full-time official status at TRASHionals (Sat.-Sun., April
17-18, 2004)
Penalties:
+ $10 for packet submitted after April 5 but before midnight Mon.,
Apr. 12.
+ $20 for packet submitted after April 12 but before midnight Mon.
Apr. 19 (only accepted by prior arrangement)
+ $30 for no packet at all (must be arranged in advance; open to
limited numbers of teams)

PACKETS:
To simplify editing of the inevitable numerous duplicates, each packet
submitted needs to contain at least 25 tossup and 25 boni. Visual or
tactile boni will be accepted if possible; physical challenges and
audio questions won't.
While we do not wish to constrain the creative bounds of a trash
round, here are loose distribution guidelines:
Number Category
2 - 4 Movies
2 - 4 TV
2 - 4 Sports
2 - 4 Music
1 - 3 Trashy "literature"
1 - 3 Trashy current events
No more than 2 each:
Video games, computer games & other computer stuff
    Comics, comic strips, etc.
    Food & beverage
    Toys
    Gadgets
    Board games
    Roadside America
    Commercialism
Anything else you deem trashy enough is fine as long as there are no
more than two questions per as-yet-unnamed category. We also
recommend mixing up your time periods, general themes, etc. (e.g. if
you send me four questions about science fiction movies from the
'70's, four questions about science fiction TV shows from the '70's,
and three questions about science fiction books from the '70's, expect
to see lots of editing scars on the final version of the packet.)

It's not mandatory, but it'll make life easier on me if you can e-mail
the packet as either an MS Word or RTF file, if the essential parts
ofthe answer are in bold, and if you insert the word "Answer:" before
each answer.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Our usual hotel of choice, the Clarion, couldn't give
us a block of rooms for that weekend. If you need help finding
lodgings, let me know and I'll see what I can arrange.

DIRECTIONS: ***Again, note that we're in the new EMCS Building***
From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then
I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for
U.S.27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street
exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St.
(you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Continue past the
UTC Arena on 4th St., which thereafter bends left to become E. 3rd St.
You'll pass a cemetery on the right, followed by a very small side
street to ignore. Continue to the next cross street, Palmetto. Turn
right on Palmetto St. The EMCS Building is on Palmetto between E.
5th and Vine St., in the second block down on the right. Look for the
breezeway through the middle of the building and enter the door to the
right of the breezeway; Card Family Auditorium is just inside on your
left.

* From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then
I-24 West; directions from there same as above.

* From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga.
As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for
two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which
will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the
same as above.

* From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of
Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and
follow the Nashville directions from there.

WHO'S IN CHARGE HERE: To absolutely no one's surprise, tournament
director will be your genial quizmaster, Charlie Steinhice. If you
need directions or have any questions, I can be reached at my office
(423-763-7147) or home (423-877-2706), or by e-mail at steinhic [at]
bellsouth [dot] net.
