CBI Region 8 brief (?) results

Since no one else has posted yet, I'll give a
brief rundown of the results in CBI Region 7 (I have no
information on statistics, unfortunately).

The field
in Region 8 was limited a bit by the arrival of a
significant snowstorm on Friday morning/afternoon. Four teams
who had planned to come -- Illinois-Chicago, Loyola,
Marquette and Wisconsin Lutheran -- cancelled, and Joliet
Junior College never showed up. In addition, the
University of Chicago only sent three players (whether this
was due to the storm or other factors, I don't
know).

That left a field of eight teams: Chicago,
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Northwestern, Wisconsin-Platteville (the host),
Wisconsin-Madison, Concordia University, Ripon and Beloit. Among
this group, a full round-robin was played, after which
the top two teams advanced to a best 2-of-3 final
(with previous records wiped clean for the finals, i.e.
the first and second place teams would each have to
win twice to take the tournament).

After the
round robin, the top four teams were:

1.
UW-Madison (7-0)
2. Chicago (6-1)
3. Northwestern
(4-3)
4. UW-Oshkosh (4-3)

Chicago and UW-Madison
thus advanced to the finals. In the first game,
Madison jumped to a big early lead and never looked back,
winning handily by something like 330-125. In the second
game, Chicago came roaring back, getting in with speed
and capitalizing on a load of Madison negs, winning
by something like 240-125. The final game was a
nail-biter, with the teams staying with each other the whole
way. With two minutes to go, it was 200-180, Madison,
and anything could happen. As it worked out, Madison
got in just ahead of Chicago on some key final
questions, squeaking out a 235-190 win which, as Madison's
intrepid coach said, took a few years off his
life.

Hence, the 2000 Region 8 CBI champion is the University
of Wisconsin - Madison, breaking Chicago's fantastic
eight-year run as CBI champs in this
region.

Congratulations to all teams on making it to the tournament
through some inclement weather, and to UW-Platteville for
putting on a fine show. It was a real treat to have easy
parking and short walks to the tournament for one
year!

Also, congrats to the University of Chicago, for
sending a team of only three players which still almost
managed to win the tournament. It was the most exciting
finals in a while, for sure.

CBI will probably be
able to give more details if they choose. For now,
it's on to nationals for UW-Madison and, perhaps,
Chicago as well.
