Big Lots Clearance Open (trash) at UTC Sun. 10/17/04

As mentioned in the COTKU messages, UTC will again host the Big Lots
Clearance Open in Chattanooga on Sun., Oct. 17, 2004. This is a
trash tournament, open to all players regardless of collegiate
affiliation or lack thereof. We are using the FOGHAT with questions
by Jeremy White and Ben Lea. meaning packet submission is NOT
required. However, teams can still earn a packet discount by writing
academic questions for us to use in either our high school tournament
on 10/9 or our collegiate tournament (COTKU) on 10/16.

There will also be a K-Tel Hell-style music game included -- now if I
could just remember who volunteered to run this one.... the guys
from Macon State, I think...

A side note: We'll be running Big Lots one week *before* FOGHAT, so
we need to make sure these questions are not circulated or discussed
in public forums, etc., during the week between the two.

TIME & PLACE: To help our long-distance friends, we'll begin
registration at 8:30 AM EDT on Sun. 10/17/04, with play starting at 9
AM. Based on typical field sizes, we may finish as early as 5 PM and
surely no later than 7:30. We will be back in Holt Hall (and maybe
Grote too.) Tournament headquarters will be Holt 124, unless we get
a bigger field and have to move to Grote 129 (we'll post signs
telling you which.) Either way, it's adjoining the same parking lot
on the UTC campus.

ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to anyone; an opposable thumb
is helpful but not required. Teams do not have to have any academic
affiliation. If you want to play, and you tell me in time, you're in.
If you want to make yourself available as a free agent to join a
team -- or if you have a partial team in need of free agent help --
let me know and I'll pass it along.

FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Again, there's no packet
submission. Teams will be four players each, with alternates OK as
long as there are no substitutions in mid-match. Depending on the
number of teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round
robin. This of course means I need to know the number of teams in
advance.

 FEES:
 Base fee $90 per team
Minimum fee after discounts: $50 per team [*except* that discounts
for writing Trevor's Trivia and/or COTKU questions can drop the fee
further, to a minimum of $40]

can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night 10/16 if
they'd prefer, and who wouldn't?)
- $10 for an experienced reader for COTKU Saturday 10/16 (*or* said
reader can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night if
they'd prefer, and, again, who wouldn't?)

Selcer Memorial HS tournament on Sat., Oct. 9 [unless the same
discount was applied to COTKU fees]

needed)

- $15, *plus* a free set of questions, for each original packet (or
equivalent) written for our collegiate tournament (COTKU) and sent to
me by 10/10/04. Again, if you're interested and need packet specs, e-
mail me.
