Penn Bowl 14: Distribution

Hi everyone,

Before I post the packet info, a few things I wanted to note. First,
a few of the dates are wrong on the announcement posting. Since must
of the post was taken from last year's Penn Bowl info, some of
the '03's should be '04's and the tournament date is obviously
in '05. Also, Samer wanted me to clarify that "full" and "half" refer
to A and B packets respectively.

The brief rundown in terms of categories is below; numbers refer to
questions required of A teams. From each "area," B teams should
remove one tossup and one bonus (if an area has two or more
categories, the tossup and bonus should be removed from different
categories).

Area I
Science 4/4

Area II
Literature 4/4

Area III
History 4/4

Area IV
Musical Fine Arts 1/1
Visual Fine Arts 1/1
Sports 1/1
Entertainment 1/1

Area V
Religion/Mythology/Philosophy 2/2
Social Science 1/1
Geography 1/1

Area VI
Current Events 1/1
Your Choice 3/3

Remember the golden rule of distribution: don't write two questions
on a single "topic" (the narrowest category that includes two
questions) if you don't expect that topic to come up in at least 50%
of packets. [For example, "questions on 20th century British
literature" is OK; "tossups on living feminist writers" is not.]

Tossups should average about five lines of Times New Roman, 12 point,
one inch margins. They should not exceed six lines.

Bonus parts should not exceed two lines unless absolutely necessary.
30-20-10s, one-part list boni with three to six answers, and ordering
boni are allowed.

When writing, remember that the majority of players are sophomores
and juniors. If read in a room with eight sophomores and juniors,
nearly every tossup should be answerable if read in its entirety.
For boni, aim for an overall conversion rate of 50-60% on each bonus
(avoid "gift 30s" and impossible boni).

Packets should be sent to <samer.ismail _at_ g.mail dot com>; we will
accept any file format that can be opened in WordPerfect 10 (RTF is
preferred; regardless of format used, avoid auto-formatting).

As always, submission of at least half a packet will result in an
automatic 72-hour extension to submit the remainder of the packet
without penalty.

If you have any questions about the packets, please send them to
Samer, and any logistical issues, please send them to Nick.

We look forward to seeing teams here in Philadelphia in January.

Nick and Samer, PB14
