Sword Bowl 2005: full results, stats, gratitude

Congratulations again to Georgia Tech, winners of Swod Bowl 2005,
UTC's seventh annual "junior bird" tournament. Full results and
stats follow, as well as the tournament's best gloriously wrong
answers, but first:

GRATITUDE

Thanks to Nikki Poarch and Eileen Steinhice for tag-teaming stats,
and to house readers Markus Iturriaga, Scotti Whitmire, David Moore,
John Kilby, Stephen Webb, Gavin Mead, Shae Williams, Glenn Allen
Bobo, and Dren Rollins. Big thanks to Samer Ismail and the Penn Bowl
contributors for trading questions, and to Williams College, South
Florida, and Eric Floyd for vital freelance submissions.

GRATUITOUS PLUG

Sword Bowl packets are for sale for $15 per set. E-mail me at
steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net if interested. Those who were at
Penn Bowl, or who are planning to purchase Penn Bowl sets, should
know that there is a fair amount of overlap between Penn and Sword
questions, although many of the Penn Bowl originals were edited to be
more appropriate for the junior bird level.

TEAM RESULTS

Some extra players from two schools formed a Div. II Ronin team to
fill the schedule void left by a last-minute cancellation. Team
results at the end of the round robin were:

Team Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM
Georgia Tech 9 - 1 2865 1435 143.00
Tennessee 7 - 3 2285 1680 60.50
Northwest-Shoals CC 7 - 3 2285 1555 73.00
Florida A 7 - 3 2100 1585 51.50
Florida State 7 - 3 2265 1420 84.50
Florida B 6 - 4 2045 1690 35.50
Athens State 4 - 6 1995 1620 37.50
Bevill State 3 - 7 1540 2005 -46.50
Div II Ronin 3 - 7 1495 1710 -21.50
UTC 2 - 8 905 2300 -139.50
Macon State 0 - 10 130 2910 -278.00

By virtue of a two-game lead over the field, Georgia Tech won first
place outright without a playoff. That left us four teams tied for
the remaining three trophies in a four-way quadrilateral of death.
We had to resolve the tie for top seeding by total points AND head-to-
head (of the four teams, Tennessee and NW Shoals had EXACTLY the same
total points, so it reverted to head-to-head between those.) Anyway,
we held a full playoff for the remaining trophy positions.

2nd place: Tennessee (def. Florida A 250-195; def. NW Shoals 285-105)
3rd place: NW Shoals (def. Florida State 225-195; lost to TN)
4th place: Florida A (lost to TN; def. Florida State 130-70)

GLORIOUSLY WRONG ANSWERS

We had some beauties, and they all made sense at the time (either as
early buzzes, or as guesses on the 30 pt. clue of a 30-20-10):

Wrong: Dracula
Right: Tom Sawyer

Wrong: William Shatner
Right: Henry David Thoreau

Wrong: Enya
Right: Kelis

Wrong: Colden Haulfield
Right: Holden Caulfield

Wrong: Ralph Nader
Right: Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

But the winner of the Most Gloriously Wrong Answer Award was Chris
Pace of Northwest Shoals, the tournament's #2 scorer, with two gems:

Wrong: the Running of the Bulls
Right: the Hajj
   and
Wrong: The Passion of the Christ
Right: Wild Wild West
